We have a trailer that belonged to my Dad. I plan on using it when moving house.
Insurance wise, do I need to get additional insurance for my vehicle?

Depends on the insurer, they're normally covered TP without notification but the policy details are the only way of knowing.

Detachable towbar fitted outside work for £230 a decent price? Includes single electrics as well. Quoted £350 at another place.
I'd do it myself but for the two days it would take me I may as well do some overtime. Don't really want to fuck the daily up either

Check you have a licence to tow first... It's not a given after a certain year.

B+E entitlement came with the basic licence before 1997 i believe

if you dont have the B+E you can still pull less than 3.5 tonne combined... that's the car, the object your pulling and all your luggage/passengers

iv also heard theres going to be a massive clamp down on trailers come april 2014, the aim is to get it to the point where all trailers will need an MOT

Pretty sure you, your luggage and passengers dont count towards the 3.5t.
I thought iut was unladen weight of your car + trailer cant exceed 3.5t

Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:
drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as it is no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg in total)

iv always wanted to clear this up properly but iv seen different things and read different rules...
IF im to use my old vectra b diesel that weighs 1372 kg without luggage etc.. and apparently the allowed braked towing weight is 1300 kg (according to parkers.co.uk, facts and figures, for that model) i should be safe and legit enough to pull a heavily stripped out corsa b v6 on a fairly lightweight trailer...? no idea of their weights im afraid, but i imagine its all under the 3.5 tonne in total
iv been pulled while towing the trailer without the car on before, my own daft fault really, but the day i bought my last trailer, i didn't have a spare reg plate to hand so just removed the one from the vectra and put it on the trailer... the officer was very fair and understanding with me and basically only pulled me to check i hadn't stole it or anything, i showed him the hand written receipt id got from the seller and while he was on he checked my licence (no B+E entitlement) he was a road traffic officer so surely he'd of picked up on that IF im in the wrong

I'm sure your right there Jed. your vectra weighing in at 1372 should leave you with over 2 ton your allowed to tow. Which is restricted by the towing capacity of your car.
A stripped corsa and a trailer can't weight over 2 ton, surely.
Have you a weigh bride nearby you could jump on?

It's 750KG OR as long as the trailer & load doesn't weigh over the car weight.
And it's everything added up, so passegers, luggage etc

i haven't got a trailer at the moment... will get a nice lightweight one once the corsa's built. but yeah, il get it weighed
doesn't what your pulling have to weigh less than the vehicle your using to pull it though??

Towbar is getting fitted tomorrow afternoon. At the moment I only want to tow the small trailer which will be under 750Kg.
I also want to move my Corsa and get it into the garage. Can I legally hire a light trailer, hook it up to the 308 and tow a Corsa C? Pug must be heavier than the Corsa

not too sure there mate... i think the pug will have to be heavier than the corsa and trailer combined and everything all together less than 3.5 ton.. if thats all good then i personally cant see why not but check...
