I have just had some new wheels fitted to my TT and since, have noticed a vibration through the steering wheel at 75mph.

My immediate thought was that the balancing may be out so took them to Kwik Fit to have them balanced. The chap at Kwik Fit said that none of the wheels were balanced and that there was a very small buckle in the rear offside wheel. He said that all 4 wheels had balanced up fine so the vibration should stop.

The vibration has decreased slightly but is still noticeable at 75mph. The strange thing is, at 70mph its fine and if I go through 75mph and hit 80-85mph then the vibration stops

Any suggestions?

I've heard that it's a conspiracy to make most people shy away from doing over 70. Apart from the elite racing drivers among us, most people would just slow down a bit.

It was fine on the wheels I had before at that speed so it must be the wheels

Would you recommend taking them to a specialist for the balancing then?

PS its a 2010 TT Quattro TFSI so shouldnt be wobbling at 80mph

I'd take them anywhere but kwik fit. Probably find no balancing weights on them at all

Are you running spiggot rings? Center bore of the wheel may be different to the hub.

Not entirely sure because the wheels were fitted by a friend, will double check though

The wheels are genuine Audi wheels, specifically for the TT so shouldnt require spigot rings?

It'll be the buckle. They did a mythbusters about driving with square wheels.

Obviously at slow speeds the ride quality with square wheels is terrible but at speed the wheel spins so fast that the ride smooths out a bit.

Same principle with a buckled wheel, if you spin it fast enough the buckled bit is less felt. I had the same on my car a few months ago... felt it at 70 and went away at 90ish.

So basically, the car feels fine between 0-70mph, vibrates between 75mph-80mph and is then fine 85mph plus

Ball joints, track rod ends, slightly flat spotted tyre, all possible but I would have said spigot rings if they weren't Audi genuine

Swap wheels front to back, if the vibration goes its one of those two wheels. Then put them back on the front one at a time to find which one.

On mine it was my spacers being dirty and not sitting flush, cleaned them up and the wobble went away.

If your not running spacers then get it balanced somewhere that isn't Kwit Fit

Something to do with the tyre pressure absorbing the impacts up to a certain speed. I'm sure there's a science to it.

Without doubt swap your wheels around. My steering wheel vibration was violent, but when reversing the wheels I couldn't feel it in the slightest.

You get like a band of rpm where the object is out of balance, we get this when running spindles in at work, from 500rpm-9000rpm they are fine, but there's usually 250rpm window in the middle some where, and the vibration reading doubles/triples.

Checked your tyre pressures?

I had wobble at 70 once when I had a tyre changed, a weight had come off the wheel. It was re balanced and was fine after that.
