Almost completed 3 weeks of cycling to work every day, today was the first time I came off the bike. Black ice down my road and fell on my back/side with the bike, helmet saved the back of my thinking box from a hard thud.

Should be law imo.
Yet theres still dickheads saying they don't make a difference.
I never leave for a ride without a helmet, on or off road. Not worth the risk.
When I was a nipper on holiday in France. I somehow rode my bike into a 5ft deep concrete storm drain on the campsite were at. I was grazed to fuck and in tears and my helmet had a 6 inch dent in the side where my head had hit the concrete edge on the way in. 
My parents had always made me wear a helmet at all times, and I hated it because it wasn't the "cool" thing to do.
Fuck knows what could have happened if i'd not worn a helmet

I agree that helmets are worth wearing but depending on where im riding would depend on if i wore one

Ive had a few bad accidents on my bike too
split my head open on a concrete fence post. could see my skull
been knocked off by a car
and my front wheel came off making me scrape my face along the ground
really should wear a helmet everytime

I don't wear one but I'm going to force myself to do it. Especially now I'm going to be covering more distance on main roads etc and biking to work next month.

I want to get back out on mine been a good few weeks since my last ride, will hopefully go out at the weekend weather permitting, I am slightly nervous after my last outting.... 2nd time with the pedals and shoes and fell into the side of a van at a roundabout
edit: agree helmets should always be worn.

Exactly how I came off, on ice but ended up with a broken collarbone. Whacked my head as well so good job I was wearing it.
I would never consider riding my bike without a helmet. The same driving without a seatbelt really.

So what light set would people recommend?
I have one of these torches:

As a front bike light.
Or would people suggest a different one? I wouldn't want to go any dimmer than that one.
Budget of around £50 for a set fair enough?

Well Edd, the manager at Marshall's Cycles in Stevenage has just bought the shop and lease, soon to change names and have a bit of an overhaul.
A pretty loyal customer base but more always required!

Get out in all weather's. Thats the idea of mud tyres, spiked tyres, and more outdoor clothing types you can shake a stick at.
Riding in tougher conditions i.e. mud etc gets you fitter and stronger too.

Same here.
Clocked up just shy of 350 miles this year already.
I kind of think if I persist in the wind/rain/snow I will be rewarded with a good summer. Thats how it works, right?

I like to think so. Certainly makes you appreciate the nicer weather and when it is a bit shite, it doesn't bother so much!
That's the reason why decent kit is good. Makes all riding more enjoyable.
