Depends whos asking.

As said, most people only ask in order to piss on your bonfire. Generally then 'civilised' attitude is not to ask and not be asked.

Weird British trait I suppose.

At work everyone knows what people earn, its a multiple of our charge out rate.

With regards to outside work, my family know, and a couple of mates. If someone I didn't know so well asked me I'd think that was a bit off.

It's a bit of a lose - lose situation. A bit like James said, I have discussed it with people I know are in a similar industry / age / position as me, as generally we're all compensated roughly the same and if it's less or more, there's usually a valid understandable reason for it.

However, telling people generally is lose - lose. There's no real upside to it.

If you earn little, you may be looked down upon by others. If you earn a lot, you may be despised by others. If you're with friends that earn less than you, they may expect you to chip in more for things (e.g. taxi's / meals) or call you cheap if you ask them to pay up.

Equally, if you know someone else is minted, you may treat them differently - expecting them to pay for things, knowing they can afford it.

- What's more, the salary is only part of the picture. You may earn a lot, but have a high cost of living and a fairly extravagant lifestyle meaning you still live pay check to pay check.

On the other hand you may earn less, but live at home and hardly spend money on anything and have a load in the bank.

Finally, the comparison of 'they have a 4 bedroom house and a 25k car outside' - that doesn't mean anything. The person could be financed to fuck, huge mortgage, car on finance etc... living beyond their means. On the other hand someone else may have loads of disposable income, money in the bank, but be driving a piece of shit car and living in a flat as it's all they need.

What would be achieved by knowing what someone else earns (other than related to your career)?

I have no interest what anyone else earns and get pissed off when people feel the need to tell me what they earn.

Most people should know roughly where they rank in their social circle in terms of salary.

Anyone with half a brain could probably estimate someone else's salary to within about £5k.

I find it interesting.... i'm always probing to try and get an idea of what others in similar roles are on.

How else will you know if you are being underpaid, or well rewarded!

I suppose thats different to some pes asking how much you earn when he sees you wearing a nice watch.

I look like a fucking mink half the time, have a fecking crazy mortgage, 4 cars, no spare money.

My friends (with less well paid jobs) think we are fucking bonkers for a 2k+ a month mortgage but soon realise the fact that simply making more money just doesnt mean you 'have' more money. Its not an over night change, so you slowly start to spend more on cars, houses whatever.

You earn more, you spend more...

based on what - sectros and industries pay differently and to different scales. If your job is specialised then the pay scale are far more complex to more standardised job roles

Im not sure how you would know someones salary within 5k without having knowledge of the industry, the actual compnay they work for and previous experience and roles etc

never had a problem discussing wages. i don't understand why it's such a taboo subject.

we openly discuss it at work, mostly because we all get paid the same unless they're a higher/lower grade.

i used to earn a basic wage stacking shelves and never worried about people knowing how much i earned.

some people are just weird.

I wasn't suggesting you would know after they have said their name and job title.

I think if you knew what they did, who they worked for and what their previous experience was, you could use that information to work it out. You could start with websites that give you salary data for common roles, then tweak it accordingly.

Obviously if you are talking about your friends, you have the benefit of knowing their spending habits.

I think the people who have no issue at all discussing their wage in public neither have a low or high salary...

I think they're happy discussing this, because they're earning some fairly average salary

This is not such a lose lose.
Most people earn the same as them = No difference when they tell them.
People who earn less, aren't that far under them - therefore it seems ok (not bragging).
People who earn more them - they don't really care about, as it is life and they're happy on their average wage. Therefore neutral.

Now... if the person is a low earner... telling other people how much they earn, is only ever going to be negative. There is no upside ... either they find out everyone else earns more, or get pitied by other people.

Equally people who earn above average amounts, they get nothing by telling other people. Without even trying it'll seem like they're bragging and will be despised by envious people - therefore not worth disclosing.

...

Therefore... The people who seem to see it as no big deal discussing it in public are most likely the people who fall in the middle - the average salary people.

Once I was very open about it, but people seemed very inclined to give financial advice based on their knowledge of my wages, and I don't care for that.

If there's an actual benefit from me telling and not just dick-measuring, then I'm happy to share.

I could give you that info.

For instance I work as a development surveyor for a development company. Dealing with land acquisition and development. Projects range from small housing developments to large mixed use schemes. We work on projects up to around £100million in value

The company is based in the south west and has a good portfolio of property and businesses. I am one of three surveyors working under the director, well alongside him.
