Right then, got the car back from my mates garage where he's been doing the cage, wheel well, seat barsnand tidying up all the wiring, extending bits here and shortening bits there, chopping out everything I no longer need, am mega happy with how it's come back to me, it's not complete yet as not only did we run out of cds but we thought it be easier to hook up the front struts with the engine out and hes gotta crack on with my other mates evo hes doing work on so got it back for a week or so, so he can crack on with that, I get the engine out etc and order up some more cds. Anyway some long awaited pics of the cage

First off all the feet and brackets where cut off as to make it a full weld in..

Then the welding commenced, here you can see some plates been made up for the rear arches as since I had the cage modified before (the x diagonal) it never sat central on both arches, this has sorted that a treat, they're both now completely boxed in.

With the original part of the cage all welded in, the door bars were first on the list..

With both sides tacked in, test fitted the seats just to make sure..

Then welded them up fully..

Then made some plates for the b pillars and welded in..

And tagged using cds.

And the a pillars gusseted..

Then it was onto the rear section, the exhaust tunnel pick up..

And triangulation from rear x diagonal to main hoop/door bars..

An extra bar at the bottom of rear x diagonals..

A diagonal on the roof..

And some random finished shots..

Some more seat porn

Mega happy with it, obviously still needs finishing with the front strut pick ups, might make the diagonal on the roof an x and also have harness bars put in the rear x diagonal, the rear strut brace will also be welded in my pal will be painting the inside, engine bay and cage when it gos back, gonna look awesome once painted, and I'm gonna feel a massive difference in handling now its all welded in and tagged to the shell

Couple of pics of the wiring all tidied and reduced, hazard light switch has also been moved over to far right where light switch is.

Pics don't really do justice but a hell of a lot of wiring has been removed, will all be hidden up out the way so not seen once the dash is in

So with the car back I thought I'd take the engine out today, all came out sweet with no dramas which is always good

Then I trial fitted my dash

It was just a teaser really as I now really want to see what it'll look like with the complete dash, gauges etc in but that'll have to wait until its painted, I just wanted to make sure it cleared the cage, however it'll need chopping slightly to clear the front strut pick ups when there done but hey ho..

And that is all

Haven't done anything on the car in a few weeks now, but have made a few purchases..

First up was the last gauge in order to complete my custom dash, the speedo..

Hasn't arrived yet, but when it gets here will be up for sale along with the st400 tacho, and water temp gauge and probably the oil pressure gauge as I have also bought this...

Turnt up yesterday, it came up for sale at a very reasonable price and just had to have it mega happy with it!! will also need to mod the dash surround to house it but hey ho.

Also went to meet sbs yesterday to pick up my new rods for the rebuild..the pile of rebuild bits is growing quite nicely

The car should be going back to have the cage finished and painting in the next few weeks so thatll more than likely be the next update. just need to get my save on now, not only am I getting married in 5 months, iv also decided to dry sump the new engine.

Fantastic work Mitch, very professional!, you say your dry sumping it, would it not be as good to get the crank Knife edged and case hardened ? save's having a big tank in the back

Cheers daine, can't knife edge a standard crank, it ruins the balancing of them, could put a steel crank in, but it would only be to rev higher and I can't rev higher without dry sumping it, and one of the advantages of a dry sump is the crank will be spinning alot more freely as its not cutting through the oil in the sump. Sbd do tank that'll fit in the engine bay just nicely, I have a fair bit of room now the battery is in the back.

Just show's how far behind times I am Mitch, did this to a MKII Escort Mexico, back in 1979
was cheaper than dry sumping.

Yeh apparently it can't be done, not properly anyway, I did enquire about getting it knife edged when I had it all balanced, they couldn't even lighten the early crank anymore than standard as it through all balancing out.

Haven't done anything to the motor really, just got the sound deadening glue residue shite off the front footwells..

Before

After

Also made a new surround for the stack dash.

Standard set with clocks removed..

Removed the glass and cut out what I needed to..

Then made a panel out of Perspex and made the cut outs..

All glued together and ready for flocking

Also popped to see steveboyslim today to drop of my cylinder head to be worked and some goodies, also ordered a pace dry sump kit.

87mm omegas

And some piper verniers..

That's it for now
