I've not posted on here for a while but I remember that quite a few people were interested in the previous pond and fish tank builds so I thought I should share the link on here for the new 3,000 tropical marine fish tank that I am in the process of building. It's going to be 8 foot long, 3.5 foot wide and 32" deep, and will be a 3 sided room divider after having knocked down the wall between the lounge and dining room, something very similar to this;

I'm going to sound like a right noob now, so I've got my flamesuit on. How do you feed them? 
I like your fish tank/pond threads so fascinating.

That'll be stunning once its finished. Thinking about getting another tank myself. Had one before but it was only japanese orandas that I had. Is it much harder to look after tropical fish?

Been following the thread since it started, going to be an awesome tank.
I picked up my new tank yesterday, not in the same league as this for size tho. I got a Juwel rio 180 second hand for £67. Gonna save up now so i can sump it and slowly start building a reef.

There is am access panel above the tank for adding flakes, frozen foods and nori. A lot of food will grow itself in the sump and get sucked up the return pump and into the tank (I.e. Copepods, Rotifers etc.) and I will be growing phytoplankton in a reactor dripping into the sump too.

Fish only systems, not so much difference. Obviously you need to measure salinity with saltwater tanks as well as all the other parameters but so long as you keep on top of evaporation with an automatic top up system then it's no bother. When you start keeping hard corals though it's s different story - calcium, magnesium, strontium, alkalinity, pH, nitrates, phosphates etc. all have to be spot on and it takes a lot of maintenance. The GHL aquarium computer though will help me keep an eye on the main parts and will email or text me if there are any problems :-)

Dan, my first marine tank was £180 2nd hand off eBay but I got the bug bad lol I think the final bill for this tank will be around £12k excluding live stock :-o

dosnt these style tanks (marine tanks) have to stand for around 3 months before putting live stock in

I know the feeling, i started with a 48ltr nano, that cost me over 1k in the long run, cant even sell the tank and pumps/skimmer etc for £50 now!
Dreading 20kg of live rock, let alone the 200+ i think u r buying lol

Moorish idol
And lastly, but certainly not least - a blue spotted ribbon tail stingray :-)

And yes they do need to stand fallow for a ling time before adding stock but the live rock is already the sump cycling and has been for 2 weeks, and another 80kg is coming from a mature tank about 1/2 mile up the road from here so there is no concern with bacteria die off.

your tank is going to look amazing i can only imagine that its going to set you back quite alot or £££££.
id love to start a small marine tank as a beginer as i have had the normal tanks you would have had so fresh water cold (gold fish ext) and iv had a a few walm water tanks.
if i wanted to start a tank like this what would be the best rout to take for a person thats never had a tank like this

I have a nice orca tl 450 nano for sale, which i used to start out with, comes with all the gear to run it and a stand, just needs water and a clean up or coraline growth. Only want £50 to get rid of it. Shame you are so far! Its ideal

This will look seriously cool when complete, would love a marine tank, had plenty of large tropical tanks but never took the plunge into fresh water. My other half loves ray's if she see's this she'll be trying to smash a whole in one of our wall's for one
