You dont need to lower a ceiling to fit spotlights unless you live in a flat with a concrete ceiling?

I live in a house.

That is what both our electrician and this plasterer that came round the other day said to me, they both can't be wrong?

would make it easier but you don't have to.

my dad just took his ceiling down and rebuilt it to fit spotlights, which is easy enough.

I assume the room above it would need to be empty so they can rip up the floorboards to do the wiring (as opposed to the false ceiling method).

the correct way to do it would just be to take the old ceiling down, put the wiring there ready, put new 12.5mm plasterboards up, skim then cut your holes for your spotlights. bringing the ceiling down does make a mess though but just be careful. your paying for all that timber for lowering the ceiling for nothing really.

You can fish the wires across without having access upstairs, just a bigger pita.

Dropping ceilings is a horrible job, even more so when it's the old style lath and plaster. Plus you will end up having to patch up the tops of the walls as it's almost certain some of that will come away no matter how careful you are.

If you don't want to pull floorboards up you can can knock holes in the existing ceiling to do the wiring then over board.

Ive just took a lath and plaster ceiling down in my house. it was the most unpleasant job ever Ive ended up making a false ceiling because the room is 4 inches lower at one end than the other

in your case I would deffo just get it over boarded. spot lights are a pain but its the price you pay, they are quite cool

Exactly.

Seems a waste of ceiling height even if it is just 4 inches. Id do it properly but thats because im an electrician and have done it many times before.

We've just done this in a day and half.

That is to say, pull down ratty kitchen ceiling and re-board with 12.5mm plaster board in a 3m x 3.5m space.

It's not difficult at all, but messy as fuck.

Still need to put the spotlights in but we have good access from above (cavity space).

Those plastering prices are horrific to me, though, I generally pay £50 a session (say 2 walls and a ceiling) but that's mates rates. I wouldn't have said £500 was reasonable though!

Most electricians and plumbers will know a plasterer they use regularly who does cash jobs.

The electrician I used, I remember a while back we asked him for a quote to get the ceiling plastered + spotlights fitted, he gave a joint quote (with his plasterer mate) of £1200 + VAT

I gave him discounts on fixing his laptops too, the cheeky fuck.
