If I accelerate hard and change gear about 5500rpm I sometimes get a pop from the exhaust, occasionally its quite a loud bang, is this bad for my engine or turbo? What actually causes it?

Its a remapped z20let with a miltek precat and rear box but the standard regular cat.

unburnt fuel in the exhaust causes popping

like below 1500rpm it will burrble as the fuel cut off is deactivated, and fuel (unignted enters the exhaust)

is it bad - no

it's just fuel blowing through and then igniting on the exhaust... I wouldn't worry about it.

Basically cams have an overlap on some engines to improve performance... so as the exhaust is closing, the inlet starts opening (so that the exhaust gasses leaving help suck the air in) ...

However, at this moment, there's the chance of unburnt fuel potentially getting sucked into the exhaust. then when it ignites it pops / bangs

My old 2.0 exploded the flexi joint

Didnt help that the omex full throttle shifter only cuts ignition and not fuel - dumped loads of fuel in the exhaust and then ignited it - sounded like war tbh!!

my car retards the timing when i let off the throttle and dumps some fuel into the chamber, cooling the pistons and causing engine breaking,

this causes pops and bangs

although this is only on one of my high map so i can turn the switch onto mid map and drive in public with no pops and bangs
