Im 99% sure what the problem is now after some reading on ISTA. Looks to be the cable that was suspected.

I have purchased all the diag toos and GT1 so i will be able to do alot of this SMG stuff myself very shortly

I hope it gets fixed whatever it is. Would be a shame to sell the car just because of it, but then again you have been saying you want rid since the day you got it

I love it tbf, i just hate the fact i am ploughing so much ££ into it. It was worse than i first thought, but hey its fun. I ADORE the smg system and the way it drives. Full throttle shifting and blips on the downchange. Smooth auto mode which saves fuel and a number of ways to drive it makes it a few different vehicles in one.

After reading BMWs tech notes on it, its really not that complicated, you just need the right diag machines and to understand how it works or you will be forever guessing.

I can't wait to get it back, I miss it so.

lol what i meant was i think auto on smg2 is shit, drive 80% in manual, i find auto either leaves the car screaming in 1st when pulling away or is too slow to change down and im left with no ooomf on corners when driving normally

I dont use normal auto really I have less options compared to you IIRC but I generally use E or Economy mode which means shifts up lower revs etc..

Once you are used to diriving it its almost perfect. If i am not using that its in Manual

Cheers Jon

Im not sure John, as said you have far more options than us lowl SMGI users do. I just have E, Auto, Winter and Manual/Sport.

You can adjust the severity of changes etc... I cant

I agree with this. When i first got my 330 auto i thought it was really bad and was forever messing up which gear to be in but after a bit i got used to it and it really is the best car iv ever owned/driven. So smooth and easy, and when you want to you just put your foot down and it's a total different feeling.

meh, mine went bang after 62k miles

is your's jerky in manual on upshifts when pushing on? that's the only thing that would annoy me tbh.

mine is very kangaroo-like when going from 1st to 2nd which is annoying, so can only imagine it would annoy me a whole lot more if every gearchange was like that.

If you have never driven one yes, its horrendous. If you learn how to drive it, smooth as silk. Can shift in auto and manual smoother than a manual now. Takes some practice mind.

Isn't that the clutch delay valve Ben? Mine was the same, makes it look like you can't drive

EDIT: Found BMWMINI parts do the cable for £280

£280 seems expensive for a cable but it's better than a 4 figure repair bill for a new box.

be nice to get the car on the road again, bet it'll feel great aswell.

I think your right

Hes trying to adjust it, its obviously not broken, just over stretched. Common problem on these at this age. Its fixable, which is the key and it wont destroy me financially. So SMG haters can get back in your box (Fad im looking in your general direction )

Fingers crossed they can get it adjusted, will invest in a cable eventually anyway

Just spoken to them and 100% its the cable, managed to put some shims in to make it select reverse and drive backwards

So new cable is on order, only one in stock in der fuhrer land. Not cheap fix, but its fixed and I can set about fitting my new suspension, MOT, Service and upgrading the stereo and then painting the bastard
