Jesus wept

Have you not fitted an uprated pump and FPR as you are going for more of a hardcore fuel system at a later date?

it works - so why do I need it.

If it isnt broke dont fix it

I will more to an external 044 and swirl pot at some time, but i'll still use the unknown pump in the tank as a feeder for the swirl pot.

Pressure reg - I dont need any extra fuel capacity, so dont need any higher pressure just now

I guess I am thinking more of a safety Margin. You know the consequences of fuel starvation and I would have thought if its the standard pump that its flow rate must surely be maxed out? Id rather the safety maring although according to my commander my injectors are maxing out at 100% duty. Im not as brave as you lol I prefer not to max things out (turbo excluded). I dont now how good the OEM Fuel regs are when you are running circa 400 bhp. I guess if its reliable and provides a smooth and stable pressure then as you say it works.

its 100% not standard.... it would have been maxed out by now as i'm passed max'ing the yellow 440cc injectors (hence 900's)

My injectors are running about 60% at full boost BUT you normally use an FPR to tune the injector duty to be around 80%

I would NOT run a car with 100% injector - no headroom/leeway.

The GTR runs 90% with a 50/50 mix of V Power and E85R. 700bhp on 800cc injectors

Genuine STi pedals fitted now, will upload a picture later. The Accelerator pedal was a complete barstard to fit as threading the pin that attaches it to the pedal actual had to be millimetere perfect.

Flocked Roof lining has arrived. I know that nothing else in the car is flocked but having a black roof lining will suit the interior better then the manky light grey one that is in their now. Hope to fit this at the Weekend.

PROJECT TEMPORARILY ABORTED

Took it in today for cambelt and RR and to investigate rattle which has turned out to be knocking from the bottom end. I did not suspect this as the rattling was very tiny and seriously sounded like a heatshield. Engine runs fine with no issues, boosts cleanly holding 1.4 bar, no knock on Apexi etc all parameters so uhm... go figure.

Not happy, why the fcuk did I buy another Classic LMAO

Well its not 100% the end of the World.

The rest of the car is Mint and has a lot of supporting mods for any future engine work.

Obviously I will garage it for now and start exploring some Options.

I have seen an short block from an 03 STi with 60k on it which I could mate up to my existing heads and then just run it at sensible power until I either get a Scoobyclinic gearset or a six speed conversion then I could run circa 400bhp.

Have also seen a fully forged STi V5 engine for sale which would pretty much be plug and play in my car.

I had planned to go for a 400/400 conversion at some point, just not this early on! I just need a 20G or MD321H turbo, 550 Injectors and a stronger transmission but now I also need a new short motor (at the very least) pending the current block being stripped down and inspected.

Im not happy but like I said not a total disaster and I'm happy to garage her for a while whilst i amass the funds.

There was a small rattle on start up but i put this down to Piston Slap being that its an MY99 car.

The rattle used to resonate between 2.5-4k rpm thats why I was convinced that it was a heatshield or similar.

actually no issues with oil pressure or anything, pulls 100%.

you dont need another expensive gearbox for 400bhp. Not on a road car anyway. I use my car in a fashion that may be described as thrashing it and its gearbox hasnt shown any issues. Standard DCCD 5sp box from STi V4. 400bhp, 370lbft or somthing

I have some spare bits and bobs if you need anything.

Semi CDB with RCM forged pistons - bottom end damage but bores look good. New crank and possibly rods. 0.5mm overbore

Open block - good bores and OE bore. Blocks are split and sitting idle.

STI v4 cams
STi v3 cams
UK 2000 cams

STi v4 heads - standard
STi v3 heads - cut back valve guides, ported - work by SMG

Hi Adam, the gearbox thing has been debated to death on Scoobynet and there are varying opinions and experiences. I have book marked an interesting thread on the topic but is on my Home Laptop and am at work at the moment. As you know its Torque that kills gearboxes and consensus was that running 400/400 on a standard 5 speed is riding your luck. Would be better reading the thread rather then me trying to summarise it here from the top of my head.

Will bear in mind the parts you have, cheers for that. Need to have a think and explore the options. I was always going to go for a 400/400 car just not this early on!

you'll find that a lot of folk on Scoobynet are fanboys and just repeat what the hear elsewhere rather than actually knowing or trying things out.

At 400bhp a standard gearbox 'may' break. I'd rather find that out and replace rather than spending 4k on a PPG/SC kit and then trundle around with an over spec'd gearbox for a mild Impreza that 'may' have had 0 issues with OE.

Point in had - we run standard gearboxes on our R32. Yes, we've 'broken' a couple of syncho's BUT not Gears. Replacement gearboxs are £150-£300. If we had a Gucci OS Giken box that cost £6k if may still break and then cost £xxxx to repair.

I'm a cheap bastard

Saying all that though, a std UK is weaker than the 5sp in the STi V3/4 for example

thats so true, its the way of all internet car clubs.

also everyone really rates what they have bought, even if its the only thing they have bought and have nothing to compare it to

also -

As a matter of course - drop the oil and have a peek. Any glitter?

How does the oil filter look?

When my last one went there wasnt too much debris around but we popped the sump off and then found one rod was movable on the crank using only a finger hmmm, where'd the bearing go!

If you used your heads they'd need stripped and cleaned.

Your rods should be ok - as it doesnt sound v.bad at the moment so not much heat to distort them. I have 1 rod that you need to use a hammer to get the cap on, and its blue on the big eng

strip, clean - New crank, new oil pump, new modine, new bearings/seals - rebuild

or just find an engine built and ready to drop in - you take a risk with this though.

Gearbox Options

I spent a shit load of time reading/researching the opinions of putting 400/400 ish through a 5 speed and there are lots of comments from people who have had real life experience including a lot of comments from tuners saying that you would be riding your luck.

Also an MY99 has the TY754xxxxx gearbox which is supposedly stronger then the earlier TY752xxxxx fitted on 92-98 Cars.

I guess one option is to run the standard box and replace parts if/when it breaks. even if this happens a couple of times over a few years its not massive costs (compared to SC gear set or 6k PPG boxes).

The 6 speed option could realistically be done for circa 2.5k but its a very involving box and I think i'd prefer the ratios in the 5 speed. Apparantly the gear stick sits very high on a six speed conversion in a classic (kinda like a sequential) and its a major engineering job to lower it (David from Api mentioned this iirc). So there are defo some minus points to a 6 speed, not really bothered about the 30kg weight increase.

Engine Options

There is a fully forged STi V5 Engine with about 3k miles iirc for sale on SN as the owner is going for a 6 speed so that he is not restricted to 400bhp and thus a 2.3 CDB big power iirc. on the face of it this looks to be a very good engine but as AK has said its a risk. Should be plug and play in my car though. Think its up for £1800

New age 2.0 STi short block, not sure 'exactly' what I'd need to do to achieve this, might be a cost effective option that I would get away with. Could add on 550cc injections and an AFP20G turbo and maybe RCM/API oil pump and have a reliable 380-400ish engine?

Dont really want to go 2.5 conversion, I prefer the characteristics of the 2.0 and I would defo need a 6 speed box for this.

Here is the SN thread : http://bbs.scoobynet.com/drivetrain-11/847425-how-much-lbs-ft-and-hp-through-a-5-speed.html

As you can see a lot of "real life" experience and not Interwebz shite.

The comments from Martyn J are interesting.

id follow what you said eariler - use the box till you NEED to change it. That will save you 3k MINIMUM!!

Have you priced a 2.1 short engine from Lateral? Or even Engine Tuner (I have no experience with them)?

Thats what I have just now with a few additions (better rods, uprated oil pump, CDB etc) - I'm currently not pushing it though, and the engine is in thoery good for 550-6--bhp.

Adam do you have an email addy I can get you on?

Have just spoken to the previous owner and he is gutted to hear this. He has also suggested a few things as well that could be causing the noise and that it may not be big end failure. After all the specialist I went to today have only diagnosed the fault 'Audibly'. The car actually went in for a Cambelt and for them to investigate the rattle. Upon hearing it they decided not to proceed with anywork and called me.

Cheers.

Yes there is an Ex Zen Mechanic based locally who works Mobile.

Going to get him to fit a newage STi Short Block. Should be a straight forward Job and will probably just need a few gaskets and go for new cambelt at the same time. Compression will be slightly different so will have some adjustments made to the map.

API do a drive in drive out rebuilt bottom end for 1.5k with Warranty.

Think I am going to do it properly and go with that option. Start driving down there then have a 'fake' but not complete bullshit breakdown and get RAC to trailer it to API

Train back to Norwich, New flywheel and clutch whilst its there (clutch slipping in 5th). Good as new and then remapped for VPOWER once back in Norwich and be happy with circa 340 (hopefully).

To get 400bhp properly, safely and with longetivity out of a Classic you are looking at serious money and I dont want to pump that kind of Money into this car. If it were a bit more special like a V5/6 Type R V Limited then maybe but meh.

At the end of the day I will have a UK Classic that stands me at 8k, I could have bought a shitter V4 STi for 3k and rebuilt/uprated it if I wanted a Monster.

Might as well keep as is, a Mint classic with sensible mods... good all rounder I guess and getting rare in this condition
