Discussion going on here about speeds limits and dual carriageways.

The general view, and indeed DVLA's is no matter how many lanes the road has it is only a 70mph dual carriageway if the lanes are seperated by a central reservation. Anything else is 60mph.

This is where the confusion is, some people are saying the central reservation must have a fixed barrier to be classed as a 70mph road, im not so sure though, im think grass or raised kerbs would also count

can anyone find any official media to state what is applicable

I was always under the impression that it was a central divider - Whatever form that took, be it reservation, barrier, hardstanding or kerb/grass

I hadn't heard of that one Steve.

Although thinking about it, I probably wouldn't think of a road with 4 lanes and no reservation as a dual carriageway, it's normally just for overtaking or up big hills etc.

National speed limit if sign is displayed on dual carriage way is 70mph unless otherwise specified. Whether that devide be a barrier, kerb, grass, cows, humans, gnomes.

yeah its the definiation of it being a dual carriage way that is the problem

no divide/paintined line but dual lane carriage way is still 60 only.

its the fact some people dont think a dual carraigeway divide can be anything other then with a fixed barrier

nah someone in the office was sounding off that a road round here was a 60mph when i know full well its a 70.

The road is dual lane with a grass verge and trees down the middle, he is adamant that its a 6- though because theres no fixed barrier.

im going to punch him square in the nose in a minute

This was talked about on my SA course too.. The guy running the course also said it could be argued that hatchings with solid lines count as a reservation

It would be signposted in most cases if it wasn't a 70mph limit. Take the A38M, what the fuck were they thinking of there?

although if you see a national speed limit sign it can be either 60 or 70 depending on what Steve has posted

if its national speed limit and one lane its 60 regardless of the central reservation, if its 2 lane unless otherwise posted then its 70

There's one the same near me with a speed camera on, which I do 70 past and it's never flashed.

No barrier, just grass on a raised bit of kerb.

A dual carriageway (divided highway) is a highway in which the two directions of traffic are separated by a central barrier or strip of land, known as a central reservation (median).

A "DUAL CARRAGEWAY" to be given its full term as defined, must be seperated by a piece of land.
