Regarding gearboxes look into this..
fitting a vag o2m box with a dog kit in it, then could even run a sequential shifter they sell for them.
Would certainly be no where near 5 figures for that lot and its what the crazy big power vag boys run.
Isn't your mapper the guy who does the o2m conversion on the renaults as well?

what about using one of them 2 speed auto gearboxes that some drag cars have?
I'm not clued up on my drag cars, but from people i've spoke to/magazines ive read, the 2 speed auto boxes are great for 1/4 mile.
But then again, i don't think ive seen a fwd car with one before
might be worth looking into?

This is the only option that I can see working out at the right sort of money , I know of someone who has done it to a vauxhall over the winter so need to have a chat with them

been back down at my mappers today (efi parts) for the mig web rr day , cas was strugling for grip even in 5th but managed 712 with some wheelspin and didnt take it to limit as it was spinning so still a bit under what it is, need to get me some 18s now to throw on to help with grip on the dyno
