Does anyone know how these work? I've just ordered one but I was wondering about the transmitter it comes with. Does it need to be fitted to the meter?

is this the energy meter that monitors you usage?

If so, dont hold your breath, ordered it 4 weeks ago, got an email yesterday saying its going to be another 12 weeks.

They're saying 90 days to me. I'm not even sure if I can use it as the meter for my place is in the car park. Was just wondering if you can connect the current sensor to the wiring in the consumer unit.

Might need to get a sparky to do it though as all the wiring is in the walls IIRC. Might be more hassle than it's worth in the end

Mine just clips over the main feed into the house.

Works wirelessly, andhas a good range on it. Took like 2mins to fit it.

Its not an eon one, but id expect it to be similar

It's just a coil that clips over the main supply cable.

Looks quite smart that. Definitely seems useful, just hope I can fit it - will look at the wiring going into the consume unit tonight, but I have a feeling that everything is in the wall and I'm not allowed to touch that.

Well, that may be how they work, but they're a bit more than just an ammeter. Plus why go out and buy that when this is free?

If its similar to the current cost one you can now connect it to google powermeter and get charts of all your usage

Yeah thats a current cost just rebranded. You can get it plugged into google powermeter and its really good for tracking your usage.

Loads of people use them at work with some of them being the driving force behind many of the apps out there.

Checked the wiring yesterday. All the wiring is in the wall and the meter is in the carpark 4 floors down. Are the sensors quite small? I mean small enough to fit in the consumer unit and then have the lead for the transmitter poke out of a small hole in the side? Could any sparkys comment on this idea, as in reality I'm not allowed to touch any of this stuff so if I could do it incognito then that would be a help

just a CT coil that mesure amps that are being pulled

Then a CT ratio is applied to calculate load

Your not actually affecting any of the wiring as its just a pickup ring you put round the coil

There will be a bit of a bulky battery & trasmitter pack with the pick up ring. I'm not sure how far it manages to transmit

ive had one for months, its quite interesting for the few few weeks, then you tend to ignore it / leave it switched off.

Its essientally a wireless clamp on current transformer which transmit to the wireless device above.

Google Powermeter makes it a bit more interesting. To see over a week how much you are using it useful.

Also highlights if you have stuff left on which should really be turned off

Mines the USB version so using it on Google Powermeter isn't very practical. I can't be bothered to download data from it to my computer everyday. They make a wifi version which will just connect to your router which is a bit better...

But hey, not bad for a freebie
