right - I'm planning on actually washing our new car so what are you supposed to use in this day and age of hyper anal detailing?

I take it a warm rinse/hose followed by a sponge and soapy water (car shampoo), rinse, chamois dry then a polish with Zymol Cleaner Wax is a bit lame. Thats been my routine over the last few years

What should be done - bearing in mind I am NOT going to spend 100's on wax and take about 5hrs to clean it.

That's exactly what you need to do.

Anything more than that is machine polishing.

Some decent wax doesn't go to waste but most of the other guff is made up for bald guys with no life on a certain other forum.

Good wheel cleaner and good tar remover will help. Then you just need to find a good wax, I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who can advise.

I guess to make sure it's clean clean and protect the paint a bit you could use the 2 bucket method. I've never tried it but the logic would work.

I've got a little brush (it's a hoof polish brush, for horses ) that I use to agitate the wheel cleaner when it's on the wheels too. Means you can get all the brake dust off in about 5 mins for all 4 wheels

I am NOT going to use any wheel cleaners... not matter what they say in the tim. They wreck the alloys. Warm water and a cloth works!

I've never had the patience to use a clay bar. My car was absolutely plastered in tar that needed off!

Not had any issues with Auto Glym wheel cleaner, not really used it enough to wreck them though I guess?

Clay is quite good if the paint really needs it.

You get wheel cleaners that don't damage the wheels now, although I've never had an issue with wonder wheels.

so thats a soapy bucket, and a warm water bucket for rinsing?

hmmm, not convinced - as the 'clear' bucket will just get the same shit in it as the single soapy one!

You rinse the sponge in the clean water bucket then back into the soapy one, it does actually catch a lot of the shit.

The two bucket method does make a lot of difference, I've been using it on the C. It sounds crazy but it's true that you actually use less water, even with a wash mitt with 2" pile like mine

Give it a good clay then polish and wax it and it'll be looking great for ages You could buy a "panel pot" of wax for about a fiver which will last a few coats so you don't have to go out and spend £30 on a tub you'll use once.

From the start, this is how i do mine.

Blast it down with the pressure washer to get all the loose dirt off.

Then using 2 bucket method (does seem to work) just wash the car with shampoo, getting all the other dirt off.

Then blast the shampoo off. And then shampooing again, then blast again!

Next clay bar the whole car, blast over with pressure washer again and shampoo, then pressure wash again!

Spray on wheel cleaner and leave for 10 mins, then sponge off.

Dry with Chamois (sp?)

Polish with autoglym super resin polish, buff off

Wax with Dodo juice hard candy wax, buff off

Tyre shine

Done

There's a point, drying. I've got one of those Miracle Dryer towels and it really is amazing. You can dry the whole car off from top to bottom without having to wring it out once

It's basically a Microfibre towel but with deeper pile so it holds loads more water.

Would a 'wash & wax' make it difficult to then polish and wax after the washing?

Sorry to high jack your thread AK
