but yeah if your feeling brutal the lock barrel are common way to get in on mk4's. wouldnt cost much to fix either. a de-lock kit is less then a tenner off ebay so if you didnt damage the door getting in, your onto a winner.

If your going to smash a window cover the window in somthing like stickyback plastic stuff to prevent it shattering too much. Oh and dont use a brick, use something small pointed and sharp.

automatic centre punch  and tape up the window or get some window tint to hold it while it shaters!

If it was a Corsa you can get the front glass out from the outside. I seem to recall breaking into somone's car at PVS one year because they did the same doing that!

Go through the lock barrel on the drivers door. Rip it out then use a screwdriver to wind down the windows and get in.
then buy a de-lock kit with blanking plate to replace it with, and get another key or youll be stuffed for next time

just drill down the middle gradually changing to a bigger drill bit the size of the lock then use pliars or screwdriver to prise out the lock, that way you wont damage the door or the little metal slider that holds it in. im not able to get over to you till end of week mate otherwise i would, i may send down jamie actually if you are struggling as he lives near you

Would you be able to find out if he is about at all? Would that work then drilling it out?
I've been trying to get in for the last 2 days now, with a coat hanger, trying the barrel and trying to poke to door release with a coat hanger

Look on ebay for a window (they are piss easy to change on the Golfs then smash the one you hget a replacement for. Easier than fucking about with locks
