How do they work on these out of interest as to me it looks like the shock sits in some kind of sleeve that bolts to the hub etc

Ive got bigger fish to fry first as its developed a really annoying rattle last night

I thought it was the exhaust touching something as thats what it sounds like. But I cant see it touching on anything.
Happens only at around 2,000 rpm. Which is exactly 30mph

Could be a plan mr B

Ive given up with this noise and im taking it to a garage to get it up on the ramps before I go deaf. I am sure the exhaust must be vibrating against the car somewhere but cant for the life of me find where

Right I am 99% sure I know what it is

Local exhaust place were sound and helped me out by putting the car up on the ramps to inspect the underside properly.

>found a crack in the magnex that they welded
>move the exhuast so it has more clearance.
> and we have narrowed it down to been the upper gearbox mount been fubared which is causing the whole car to vibrate and show up all these noises

Not bad for just giving them some beer money

Going to order a mount tomorow and hopefully solve it

I once had a rattle on the exhaust of a vtr. It was the centre section hanger on the inside of the exhaust tunnel.. Worth a little look. That was rattling around 40mph and under braking.

3 mounts in total, as said above. Its 3 bolts on the mount, battery off, put a jack under the box with a bit of wood, off with the 3 bolts, replace, easy peasy

Bingo Bango

Found the problem

Whipped out the ECU to look at the drivers mount and came across this

Big brass ball thing was loose

bolt going from in here

To the screwdriver end here

Broken

What do I have to replace the brass bit and bolt? or can I just get a bolt?

Also the rubber here is loose

Should that be replaced too?

And wheres the best place to get all this stuff?

That seems to be a common one to go, my brothers GTI did exactly the same.

Cant remember what the layout of the GTI mount is again, its different on mine.

You dont need the buffer part anyways, it looks ok. Take the mount off the engine and take a look.

should I get one of these as well as mine looks a bit worn and might be putting more stress on the bolt

http://www.106parts.com/s2/page1.php?area2=2&sitepage=7&area3=50&area4=213&part=14985

If I can get the bolt out the rubber head/shock thing can I just buy a bolt?
