Just checked the internet, it's all over AV Forums etc, apparently loads of people have done it.

This is correct the phone is bought with no contract it only becomes active once registed through the i tunes website , so if the phone is never registed on the site then you are not entered into a contract.
But for 35 the tarrif gives you 600 mins and 500 texts unlimite wifi and downloads which is the whole point of the i phone!
Oh yea i work for o2 so i can conferm this is correct!!

Surely Wifi is free anyway?

The only good thing about the o2 contract is the unlimited downloads IMO.

yeah have to add, you will lose ure warranty if u unlock it etc, as ure passing activation and the phone doesnt get registered on there system

yeah its basically a blank sim in the phone not registered no nothing

yeah wait a few days/weeks before updating if there is one as some can lock the phone, jus wait for the hack to come out to unlock it once u update, altho software version 2.0 thats not out for a few months yet has been cracked already lol
