whats the point in only spending a couple of hundred on a complete shitter, to then spend loads of engine and replacing all components of suspension etc.

Then you may of spent a lot on a crapish car.

HAve to say, my dads GF has an MX5 with hard top.

He turned up the other day in it with the roof off and soft top down.. Driving position was really low, he had a baseball cap on (not a chavvy one or anything), but I could not help but say to him "you look a PROPER geek in that"

But he doesn't care. He absolutly loves that car. He drives down loads of country roads to work and ends up taking the MX5 all the time as its such a blast to drive...

And he's got a 193mph MV Augusta to use and a 2.0 Turbo Saab convertable

But if you can cope with the image (owning a corsa, it shouldn't be an issue really ) then a great great great little car. 50/50 weight balance. Just needs more power.

What's the point on spending loads on a really good car, to replace everything anyway?

If I spend £5, or £50000 on the car, I'll still replace everything suspension and brakes wise etc......

Gearbox isn't behind the engine, where I'd need it to be

yeh but robin, what i meant was, it's better to have something that had a good chassis / weight balance to start with.

People post the retro cars as they're cheap, but they'll generally be fairly heavy due to how they were made.

You think a Cortina/Chevette/ will be heavy? Old cars weigh nothing. I'd be amazed if a Chevette weighed as much as an MR2.

Good chassis is almost irrelevant when you can move stuff around and make everything adjustable, use whatever struts you want and tie it all together with a proper cage.

I really don't see the point in buying a £3000 car which handles "well" for a standard car, when nothing standard spec will be left on it, and it won't handle any better than a cheaper car after all the bits have been altered.

acctully mr2, my mate has a mk2 which owned everything on a trackday recently, and its slower in a stright line than J18 was, he's putting a camrey v6 in it now

E36 saloon, sooooo much potential weight saving, massive engine bay, well balanced car to begin with, huge aftermarket supply of parts, look so cool when done properly

ok, if you're gonna spend millions on it and get the best of everything go ahead.

I still think it's better to start with a good base car, even if you are updating things... for example there's probably better designed products such as suspension aimed at something newer more common than something older.

That said, there's a MGB v8 that goes around castle combe and it's fucking rapdi, 360+ bhp and hassles all the evos goes so quick.

It's not a case of spending millions, seriously, there's no difference in price for proper bits for a BMW M3, or a Skoda Favorit, they'd both be a similar price for the same 'motorsport' parts.

Suspension wise, that really doesn't matter, if I buy a car which has leaf springs on the back, drums all round and hydrolastic dampers on the front, ALL of that can be replaced with modern stuff with a little bit of fabrication.

That shitty old car can be adapted to use decent coilovers all round and proper brakes.

All of the suspension can be adjustable, everything, even on the back, for camber, castor, whatever.

There's more off the shelf bits to fit more modern cars, but you just have to look at the underside of the RST we've got in to see what you can do to an older car to make it awesome.

hes doing the mr2 challange fad, in a team car, with mechanics and stuff 2 of the other drivers allready have v6 mk2's
