The good version of masking tape

Thanks Im going to be leaving them as they are for now as i like having the grey plastic running around my car. Just having the skirts make it complete (if you get me)

Might get them colour coded one day, at some point. But for now its staying unpainted

Well I missed out on some white CDX alloys that Graham had for sale, but once i had seen them and done a quick PS of them, i decided i wanted them
Photoshop looked like this -

Anyways, i set about hunting some down and finally got my hands on some from a chap on an astra forum So went and fetched them from erm south somewhere (300 mile round trip)
Only picture i have of them when i got them

Needed to source 3 more centre caps too, which i managed to get from Tom Simes x

Masked them up and sanded them down -

They then got a nice coat of high build primer

Looking spanky -

With the centre caps looking good and done it was time to start the alloys Wasnt too sure how far i wanted to take them down, but some had scuffs on them and slight kerbing on the edge.

Had a bit of a think too, and decided that it was best if i were to do a proper job on them and buy new tyres also. So got the old ones stripped off - which im trying to sell as part worns as they werent too bad.

Sanded the fronts down carfeully and also did the backs while i was at it. THe backs were really grubby though - even after a wash with auto glym stuff. So was tough going.
All 5 fronts were sanded down and the inner edge of the alloy on the inside.

Backs of the spokes was going to be tricky, but i wanted to do a proper job so it meant getting the black flakey crap off Out came the spot blaster
Borrowed one large box from work...

**please bear in mind this was done with what i have, i do the best with what i have got**
So i set it up on mums garden table and hey ho i had a blasting box (Wickes fleece FTW )

Before spot blasting -

After spot blasting -

Came up quite well, quite pleased

All the backs got a coat of Etch Primer just to be on the safe side, wasnt high building them because that would be a waste.

Once dry i wiped the fronts down and set about with the filler, sorting out the few scuffs and kerb marks that were on them.

All smooth and looking good. So it was time to high build the fronts

Started to look a bit more interesting now after having spent so long sanding them

Slight overspray, but didnt matter

Then it was time for colour Decided upon Honda Championship White and so nipped off to get it mixed up. I sprayed the backs first because i figured it would be easier to practice on the backs and get into the routine by the time i got round to doing the fronts - made sense to me.

Colour looked good and i was pleased with it.

Then after backs had dried, i sprayed the fronts and the centre caps.

Then it was laquer time. Now this is where i usually mess up. I can do paint etc, but i cant for the life of me do laquer correctly But i had help from Graeme so all was good Thanks Graeme.
So once again i started on the backs.

Then i plucked up the courage to do the fronts of the alloys and the centre caps
They came out slightly orange peely, but i had expected this.

So i resorted back to CS once again And spoke to Rob B who helped me out a treat. Thanks Rob
Decided that they would be needing another heavy coat of laquer. So once again plucked up the courage and went for it.
Result was better, but still slightly orange peely. So i left the laquer to harden off over night, then nipped to Halfords and bought me some rubbing compound. Unaware of how much effect it would have.

Rubbed this onto the centre caps and alloys using a damp cloth, then wiped it off. Which left a dull surface.

Polished this up using Auto Glym Super Resin Polish.

Worked really well, before -

After -

All polished up and looking much much better

Stripped the masking tape off one of the centre caps and i liked what i saw

Really happy with the end result. In the mean time i won some locking wheel nuts and ordered 5 nice new 195/45/R15 Goodyear Eagle F1's
Which arrived earlier than expected (today).

So set about getting the tyres fitted asap. Went to the local garage i normally use as the lads there are top class

First one was brought out after they had cleaned all the centre cap thread outs for me using a tap tool

Looking goooooood

They did my tracking for me while i was there

The lads seemed as excited as me to see how it looked
Looked spanking when it came out Woo
Mums camera skills

And jobs a gudden Taken me a while, but ive learnt as i went. Comments and constructive criticism is welcome. Really pleased with how she stands atm, as far as im concerned, the outside is done as per modifications (for a while)
Would look lovely sitting lower, but coilovers are on the list for maybe next year

Thanks to everyone that has helped with all my queries Muchly appreciated
Marcy Marc

Edit: Almost forgot. I must be grateful to the 10 rolls of tape that have served me well by propping up my alloys and centre caps

First time i have sprayed something as big as a set of alloys. Did roof rails using compressor and the boot for the mini but alloys went quite well

Im fairly confident about refurbing my SXI alloys on the cheap now. Also the SXI's wont be anything special as they are just winter wheels. So if they bodge up then dont matter.

I know I guess i got lucky. The rubbing compound was quite impressive tbh.

Im usually so nervous about spraying laquer because thats the final step where it could (usually does) all go wrong.
Guys at the garage were impressed too

I don't rate your mum's camera skills

Very nice Marc, good on you for having a go at all the work yourself too, especially with only little knowledge and learning on the way, I think it feels more your own when you've put the work in instead of giving someone else the money to do it for ya
