oh dear, this sounds like the exact problem me and lee m had with my car. wish i could tell you that we sorted it...but no. never found the problem. Only thing i could think of was the after market alarm i had fitted. Lee and me tried everything!

In the end I converted it to run carbs with a ECU-less ignition setup and sold it

the thing is, you should be able to easily bypass that by just connecting the ignition live straight to the battery instead of passing through the ignition barrel. However i also tried this and it still didn't work. you could give it a go though...

you should just do what i didn't. Rather than spend time buying endless replacement parts, phone up an auto-electrician. Not sure how much they cost but it should save you alot of hassle..

It's booked in for Thursday already, hopefully he'll spot the problem.

How do I get to the ignition live to connect it to the battery then?

the ignition live runs from the +ve side of the coil to the ignition barrel and then to the battery so i think you can just connect a wire from the coil to the battery...just make sure the engines turning over else it can burn out the points if you leave it on for too long

Should be ready this afternoon, got another cable from an Astra to splice into the loom, apparently the hard part is attaching it as the sheath acts as the earth on that.

I had similar problems with my old engine, dodgy dizzy wiring, so one day it would spark and another day it wouldn't,lol.

Good to hear it will be sorted anyway

Not yet, I wasn't gonna go buy one if the car was gonna be scrapped!

And if you give me some money I'll gladly get a new car
