I'd have an LCD for the size reasons. But if i only wanted pure image quality and size/heat/power usage was no issue i'd take a long serious look at the CRTs first, before an LCD or a plasma.

I seriously wonder how many of these elcheapo LCD HDTVs everyones buying use craptastic TN panels. I wouldnt buy one of those if they were half the price.

I woudln't buy a cheap lcd either.
Apart from black levels/contrast, what exactly is better on a crt than say a sony bravia lcd?

Depends what panel the LCD uses, just because its a brand name like sony doesnt mean it uses a great panel type either. But things like colour reproduction is better on CRTs and so is pixel response and CRTs dont suffer issues when you run outside of the native resoultion, plus the viewing angels are better and the contrast is.

Infact, the only things that are really worse on CRTs (other than size/power/etc) are the refresh rate problem (flicker) using a 50Hz interlaced video format (which is fixed in HDTV signals) and perhaps to some very small degree LCDs tends to offer slightly more brightness than a CRT, but thats subjective really.

EDIT: As i said before, as long as you sepnd serious cash on a good LCD the difference will be very small in image quality, but on these cheap £300-400 32inch jobs the difference will be more profound.

I like my 32" Bush LCD compared to my Sony Wega CRT..

Prefer the looks and the picture is spot on..And for £500 you can't go wrong even if it's not a £2k LCD.

Sony use son/samsung joint developed panels.
Samsung use exactly the same panel and they look totally different.
It doesn't all depend on the panel.

There aren't any choices for hd crt apart from samsung.

CRT just isn't an option now.

1k will get you an lcd that will more than rival the majority of crt's.

My sony crt cost that and it is one of if not the best pictures I have ever seen on a crt.

Watching sd analogue broadcasts the crt might have an advantage.

Anything else the lcd wins hands down, especially when displaying the hd 360 signal that steve will be using it for.

In this case there is really nothing to even think about imo.

I said type of panel, not brand of panel, completely different things.

After the panel, the only thing that will really effect image quality is the backlight used and partly how well its put together (some LCDs suffer from backlight bleeding).

You would have to be buying the cheap tv's to get non svpa panels.
The sony/samsung ones are svpa.

The whole image processing circuitry will effect the image quality.

That is how samsung and sony tv's look different and use the same panels.

The electronics are also different in models higher up the range of the same manufacturer using exactly the same panel.

this is a no-brainer CRT or LCD shouldn't even be a question to consider

CRT is old technology. End of. LCDs and Plasmas are the way forward and even Plasmas are starting to be phased out.

Things like viewing angles, contrast, brightness are all much much better on LCDs now and you don't have to spend mega bucks for the privilege (see Mav's LCD) - great example of a good all round LCD without the need to rob banks.

Yes really cheap LCDs are a no no. But isn't this the same rule applied to any technology? The more you spend the better the product.

HD is here and pretty soon everything will be HD. That alone is reason enough not to buy a Standard Def CRT. The new HD CRTs are awful and I'd avoid them like the plague.

Steve - TV looks good mate. I'm surprised there's no component connection, you'll have to connect your 360 up via VGA (the pc input). Some people say this actually gives a better picture than component anyway.

Good luck with your purchase mate.
