the thing is the referee booked him which meant he had seen it and therefore The FA are not allowed to take any more action against the man. It should have been a red and he should have been banned for a lot longer.

Was he provoked earlier on in the the game?

it didnt show anything in th highlights

just couldnt believe the lenght he ran an you could see the intent in his face, i thought the worst bit was when u see mendes glance to the left to see thatcher running at him.

filthy challenge, its discracfull the fa cnt take it fully i mean they have the right to drop a red card to a yellow or simply over turn a red red to nothing but they cant ungrade a yellow to a red

that was awful i think even man city fans would agree that was a terrible and vicious attack on another player it wasnt a challenge he didnt even look at the ball, and thats a yellow card come off it, straight red and a lot of bans

they should, but under their own rules they cant. And in the past where refs have obviously missed what has happened and only booked the guy they havent been able to take things further.

no they cant, and havent done in the past.

Why would they make a rule up saying they cant get involved if the ref has seen it and done what he thinks it deserves (even if they are wrong) and then go back and do something anyway. They dont and wont work like that.

If there is a way round it (like the ref saying the booking was for something else) then they can take it further, but if not he'll get away with it.

reading the itv review it says this

"It is not the first time Thatcher has been in trouble this season.

On the Blues' pre-season tour of China, the former Tottenham man was sent off against Shanghai for two bookable offences, but not before putting an opponent in hospital with a punctured lung after a similar challenge to Wednesday night's, which also went unseen by the referee. "

as far as i am aware he is stil in hospiatal as he suffered a fit/seizer at the scene i just hope thatcher is feeling uilty today knowing he put a man in hospital

he was also banned for 2 games in 2000 for elbowing someone, so he isnt shy of doing this kind of thing!

the fa hav said they are going to look into it to see what exceptions they can make under the existing guidlines rulebook as this type of challenge is unacceptable

"As referee Dermot Gallagher did brandish a yellow card it had seemed as though Thatcher would escape further action, but the powerbrokers at Soho Square are now treating the case as an exceptional incident.

The City defender has previously been punished for elbowing Sunderland's Nicky Summerbee in 2000, for which he received a two game ban, and may now find himself in hot water again following his latest indiscretion."

Football Association officials are looking at their own regulations for punishing players to see if further action can be taken against Ben Thatcher for his crude challenge on Pedro Mendes.
