new conversion? maybe the pipes are connected wrong.

if not then it could be an airlock, blocked hose, head gasket.........

Faulty sensor temp sensor? Let it go to 98 degrees and see if the fan kicks in.

run the car while its parked.

once its warmed up to around 90 or so, feel the rad and the pipes going to and from the rad, are they hot? If they are then this would indercate that the thermostat is opening up correctly and letting water through.

Is the fan working?

One way to check if the fan is working is to power the fan from the battery and make sure it spins.. if it does then you know the fan isnt at fault.

If the fan doesnt come on automatically around 100, and when you bridge the cables to the battery the fan does come on - then its possibly the temp fan switch at fault?

Rad could be blocked, check that the rad gets hot at the top and bottom.

Just bridge the two pins on the plug which goes into the fan temp switch on the drivers side of the radiator and if it doest work with the irnotion on its the fan.

However if the fan works but doesnt come on around 97c then it could be a fan switch in which case it'll need replacing and the whole system bled again.

If it has a air lock undo the coolant tank cap and run the engine making sure all the air escapes you should see bubbles popping up every now and then. Once it boils it should be air free IIRC

Dont remove the thermostat its there for a reason, a garrage cut mine out and it was just plain crap.

Surely the stat only fits in one way round plus if it wernt it wouldnt make any diff other than leaking surely?

To check if the stat is working just check if the hose to it gets warm at 90 as it will show whether its opening and closing. Then if its opening dont worry about it move into another possiblle senario

Please check:

Fans working
if not check it works under power (bridge the two pins)
If fan works then its the fan switch
if so change sensor and bleed air out of cooling system

sounds like such a simple thing to fix too

Ive had a similar problem. R ur heater air vents blowing hot air inside ur car. if they're not. the Its most likely 2 b an airlock in ya cooling system. When ya head gasket goes u'll find a loadsa white gunky stuff inside ur cylinder head when u remove the oil cap on ya engine. Other symptoms include overheating, white smoke/steam coming from exhaust. and some people have reported hearing water trinkling or gushing when accereator pedal is pressed. Hope this helps m8!

the switch that sends the signal to the gauge could be earthing itself out and making it shoot up.

This happened on mine.
