As above guys. Just bought a Stage 3 X16XE head for my Corsa Sport. Gas-flowed, ported, polished, blanked EGR, multi-angle valves and guides, knife-edged, etc.

One problem..... Upon closer inspection of it today the head number upon it refers to it as being an X14XE/X16XEL cylinder head.

What I know is that the X16XEL is exactly the same block as the X16XE but is the "L"ower Power Band engine found in the Astra. The lower power is due to a difference between heads. From what I can find the differnce in head and so power output (100BHP instead of 108BHP) is down to the X14XE head having smaller inlet and exhaust ports as well as the exhaust cam having a lower duration and valve lift. The cam isn't an issue for me as i'll be using my X16XE Piper Fast Road cams.
But the port size may be. That's what I need advising on guys.....

Simply put, if an X14XE head was ported to a Stage 3 level. Would/could the port sizes be the same as an X16XE Stage 3 head? Or is there less material to work with on the X14XE head and so the ports couldn't be bored out to a size as well as an X16XE head.

Also, what are your opinions on multi-angled valves? How are they actually better? And how can you tell them apart form the standard valve? Cheers guys

The thing that makes the XEL's have less power is the inlet manifold IIRC.

Hmmm. Thanks for those pics and measurements mate. I've just measured the inlet ports that have been ported and polished to a Stage 3 level and they come in at 52mm, 52mm 53mm and 54mm. So this ain't looking good. Basically I have a Stage 3 X14XE head which port sizes are actually smaller than a standard X16XE head. What about the exhaust ports? What are they standard on each of these heads? Or are they the same in size?

The guy does them to order. He works for a performance head and head refurbishment company down in Telford. But he also does them for a great price by doing them and selling them in his own time. You order one and within a week he'll have one ready for you. He does Stage 2 for £325 plus VAT plus £75 deposit until you can exchange your head. And Stage 3 for £425 plus VAT plus the deposit.

I managed to do a deal with him for cash in hand for £425 for a Stage 3 head with no exchange and no VAT. So quite chuffed.

The head is glass beaded, acid bathed, resurfaced (not just painted silver), gas flowed, ported, polished, skimmed, knife-edged, fitted with new valve stem seals, new springs, multi-angle valves, multi-angle valve guides and EGR blanked off (if you require it) to name a bit of the spec. Really nice guy, sound and friendly as. And even through a set of hydraulic lifters in for me.
Only thing the head doesn't come with is the rocker cover, manifolds, cams and pulleys. But if you really required any of these i'm sure that he'd do his best to fulfil your requirments.

remove un-neccesary metal from the ports of the head (the bits the air flows through before it gets to the valve opening.) then make the passage as easy as possible for air to flow through.

Let me know what you guys think to it. Let me know your views on whether it was worth the cash and whether the craftsmanship is good enough/enough has been done to it for a "Stage 3" head. Cheers all.
