as above really, a tank is only getting me 220 - 250miles, whereas was 300 + a few months ago, and there is a strong smell of petrol around my car now...

petrol smell :O duno much but wat about a leak in some piping or tank maybe...??

smells like a leak somewhere mate have it running and look for leaks mate

check the injectors for leaking. my a4 was doing it round one of them, i wrapped the pipe with ptfe and put it back in and its fine now.

where would i need to look, its especially bad under choke....

best bet would be to park the car for a while and see if you get a pool of fuel under your car somewhere and see if you can work out where it coming from, from where the pool is. Or have a look under the car for any wet patches etc def sounds like a leak to me though!

only when its running, im pretty sure its not a leek, as theres no mark on the drive, and the peretrol doesnt drop on gauge when its off, it just seems to use a lot, even when driven slowly.

its going in for a service in 2 weeks think he would be able to diagnose it ok? i was hoping for some ideas so i cud look and not have to pay an exorbidant repair bill...

um i think the tanks ok, ive been under car a fair bit recently and didnt notice any obvious trouble there..

a;lso as i dsay no sign of petrol leakage on the drive, could the engine just be over fueling for some reason?

dont necessary need to have a patch it may not leak to that extent. if it was overfuelling it would have black smoke coming out the exhaust

yes my dad did say that it was smoking to a degree, any other symptoms / causes of this

its an X14Xe btw.

walk around it holding a lighter to everything, when it bursts into flames u know there is a leak.

could be to do with the lambda sensor, have u got a decat?

nope no decat, and its only been dpoing it the last couple of months, nothing has changed engine wise...

If my air filter was dirty cud it cause this?

The fuel wont come out if its leaking and the car standing still cos the fuel system is only pressurised once the engine is running so if it was leaking it would show up with engine running, i had this and it was worn injector seals

go under the back seats/boot inside the car and pull up the round rubber lid type thing (about 8"round)
there will be two petrol pipes and i bet one of them has come abit loose.just put a jubilee clip round it.its exactly what was happening to my old sri

ok thanks ill have a look, its having an emissions test donre free tommorow so ill get that checked too.

The engine is only 15000miles old, nothing shud be that worn out shud it?
