No you dont.

If its DDR you can run what ever. Usually DDR400 + these days is the standard. Running higher usually is dependant for overclockers. Means the memory runs in sync with the pc. IF you go over your memory ceiling you need either good cooling or luck. Because it'll cause crashes and very unstable.

Depends on the kind......the "Barton" XP2800+ runs at 2.08GHz, the "Thoroughbred" XP2800+ runs at 2.25GHz.

I know the different speed memories have different pin configurations on the bottom too, so you have to use one suitable with your mobo.

Barton XP2800+ is £108.43 with a heatsink & fan, Thoroughbred XP2800+ is £96.94 without heatsink & fan......going to work out pretty similar, really.

Thourghbread chips are older than the Bartons, the Barton has a higher FSB and more cache memory. Its the better one to go for.
I'm not sure if the Thourghbread chips are still being manufactred?

According to Scan, both the Barton & Thoroughbred chips are both the same FSB for the XP2800+

the differance between Thourghbreads and bartons, apart from the bartons is newer, and the chips are different colours. Thourghbreads are green and bartons are grey. Bartons run slightly cooler and have more level 2 cache. Bartons are BETTER. So get one.

on motherboards and memory
do i have to buy memory that matches the motherboards? ie ddr333 400 etc?

as long as you get DDR333 or higher you will be ok. You are best to get DDR33 2x512mb memory as you won't see any differance to having ddr400.

dunno which kind of motherboard to buy
what does anyone recommend?
[/qoute]
get this one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=43223
as its one of the best AMD motherbroads at the moment and it will take the ram that i talked about above.
As for Processors you already know what you want, heres on of the cheapest places to get it : http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=46392 .

Hope that helps.

I think it has double the cache so runs a fair bit quicker

i aint read all the above, but front side bus (fsb) is the speed at which your processor communicates with the memory, so your processor, motherboard and memory all need to be at the same speed.

if they are not at the same speed, i believe it will just run at the slowest speed in the link

ie if cpu = 400, m/b = 333, ram = 400

it will just run at 333

got this reply to my Q

athlon duals are boards that enable you to put 2 processor in your machine, unless you need MEGA processing power or your building a server then dont get one, also if you did you need to buy special athlonm chips called athlon MPs (multi processor)

the rest are chipset makers that make the chipsets for motherboards, via has issues with certain software and ussually requires pathes to be installed after you install windows. sis is probs the best chipset you have mentioned tho.

hope this helps

Id go for Barton chipped 2500+ i have this and works a dream ecspically on photoshop with crucial ddr400 512kb memory, and they aint that expensive either, and bartons can be overclocked to near on 3.0ghz, ive clocked myn to 2.85ghz.

places to buy from are:

www.ebuyer.com
www.overclockers.co.uk
www.microdirect.co.uk

and motherboard wise get a Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe nForce2 (Socket A) supports ddr400, but if ya got abit of money to spend get 64 bit AMD processors worth that bit more imo.

oh and get Coolermaster Fan for CPU, works like a dream plus no noise , i got aero 7 lite one.
