Really nice cars, nice to drive, well built. Not too sure on things to look out for as I've never owned one, drove numerous ones though and allways liked them. Best shape apart from the MK2 IMO.

That's MK4, I've driven all of them practically. The TDI's are good cars.

I drove an MK4 R32 a good few years back now, loved it, the sound was immense.

Look for worn suspension bushes, and if its a petrol one, be ready to be changing coil packs.

Check the service history, all the stamps and basically anything you would look for on any other car

Just a good look at the arms under the car, and when on a test drive listen for any strange knocks or rattles.

The coilpacks are pretty esay to change, If it starts up and sounds like its on 3 cylinders it will be one of these. Theres 4 of them at £30 a pop. The hardest part is getting the engine light turned off, but can be done with anyone who has a diagnostics machine or vag com.

get a hpi check on it, use the RAC website they are a tenner. you have to think about when you come to sell it, the 20v na isnt that sought after and when you want to sell it on, you might not get someone as keen as yourself who wants to buy it.

Look for rust on the tailgate by the handle, windows not working, scratched up interior door handles.

Edit; Have you thought about getting a diesel one? A 130hp GT TDI would be a much better drive than the NA 20v

I have thought about the Diesel one but i think im the most southernly member on here and good cars are harder to come by! I normally dont mind travelling for a good buy but ive got a son now so it isnt as easy and i just dont have the time! Il look into insurance for other models.
