Pro's & cons?
Im seriously thinking im being daft shelling out £k's for having a decent car that just gets wasted on the long 90% motorway commute to work.
I paid £6k for my golf the a grand on parts to get it how it is. Its been bumped twice, & gets clarty within a week - covering around 600 miles a week! It had just been serviced when I bought it in Oct & the 10k service is due again now already.
This month im due to shell out for Service, tax, mot, & repair a bearing.
Best part of 700 quid
Insurance has went up a bit also with the bump I had.
My workmate has just bought an astra estate for £230 & tbh its ideal for running in & back. 6 months tax & test on it & once thats up if its gong to cost money he says he'll get £50 from the scrappers & buy another one!
Im feeling a shitter would be better suited & bank the money from my GTi?
In 11 months I tart working outside the UK mainland so can buy a nice car again, aimed for weekend / pleasure (min miles) driving only!
Think its a good idea or not?
Also how much for my Golf?

seems like the best way to go. if its becoming a financial strain why are you tying all your money up in a car that only gets driven on the motorway.
but with the amount of miles you do i wouldnt suggest going to right at the bottom end of the market mate. can still get a good comfy car for under a grand.
plus its only for 11 months. get a mondeo or vectra or something motorway cruisers you can pick up for pennies.

Depends - if you buy a shitter and hate driving it might as well stick with what you've got.
Pick something half decent for 500-750 quid that isn't going to break and you might enjoy thrashing it about. Scrap it at the end and get £50 back you've still spent less than the Golf will soon be costing you.
That said, you will have to do the work to sell the Golf, so may as well keep it after spending all the money I'd have thought

i wouldnt go for something like a £230 if it was goin to b your everyday car doing 600 miles a week
i would go for something like a 1500-2500 car something like a pug 306 diesel the later model they did and pocket the rest

I like my car its comfy (suspensions a bit hard now with coilies) heated seats & cruise are a blessing on long motorway drives. I just think its getting wrecked, & its money I maybe shouldnt have spent!
Im not tying all my money up, im not skint, I like new cars, its good on mpg - just taking a pounding!!
Its on 95k now in a year that could be 125k.....will be worth pennies & id have spent a shit load maintining it!!
Im looking at my mates £200 astra with envy 
Id just buy an absolute tractor for 200-300 & run it til it blows up tbh!!

I bought a Nova for £450 over a year ago, ran it around winter/while i wasnt using my corsa. Low maintenance, hardly anything went wrong and if it was a diesel it would have been perfect!
Sold it for £200 a few months ago so £250 for a car that took abuse for over a year is money well spent in my book.

Can you not afford to keep the golf and buy a commute shitter?
I can see your point though using the golf and racking up the miles etc. I regret selling my MR2 and buying a corsa, so be careful you may feel the same!

No point doing that really, the golf would never get used & id end up wasting more cash having 2 cars & depreciation on the golf!

Go for it, I've been running my 306 for 3 years now while i've been a penny-less student. It broke down the other day, the AA man had to bodge me an injector pipe on as it snapped (a bolt missing on the pump caused it to vibrate and eventually snap) anyway, went to peugeot and they wanted 50 quid for new pipes, went to the scrapyard, of which there were 8 306's, 5 pound job done. 
It's a diesel, tweeked to 110ish bhp from 92 for free, engines more or less indestructable, cost me 80 quid to get it lowered all around, handles well, can upgrade for fuck all too, example i recently got 266mm brakes, pads and discs for 50 quid, half leathers for 110 quid.
it's hardly amazing but for low cost car/shed motoring and the odd bit of modifying when bored it comes into its own.
Also if you get an early one and it is running a bosch fuel pump it can run veg oil no problems.

Just make sure you look for something with around 12 months MOT and plenty of tax. Try cut out all those annoying little costs etc. Bang it on TPTF insurance, Limited mileage (Your only keeping it for a year so screw the insurance company, you wont be renewing next year  )

Not sure id get full tax & mot for a couple hundred, if something lasted 6 months & I got £50 for scrapping it id be happy!

And you can ALWAYS trust a newer car?
Older cars are ace and if anything does go wrong are usually very easy fixes.

Golf been unreliable - in 2 crashes. I can always get a lift or borrow a new car for a couple days.

My friend is a joiner. He takes his tools to work with him.
He bought a 1.3 G reg escort last year with 5 months tax and 11 months test for £50.
It's never, ever failed to start, cheap on petrol. He's spent £20 on some springs and £20 on some wheels.
Perfect for mooching about back and too from work.
