This geezer from Shell told me that if you run the incorrect grade of oil, i.e too thick then that saps power, stands to reason, the difference between a Ford Zetec on the recc'd 5-30 and 10-40 is 4bhp power loss.

Thats a mad fact.
Other than running the correct oil, making sure the last owner has not put some gloppy monograde in it, the inlet manifold, and then a Dastek or something.

I swapped my 1.4 16v for a 1.6 16v out of a 95 GSi and the difference between the two has suprised me, so far I've just added a PiperX Viper, but theres still a massive difference. I got the lump( 50k and FSH), gearbox, ECU, new clutch, driveshafts(old ones were knackered) and the Viper all fitted for well under a grand. Made a realy big difference and its still got lots of tuning potential ( TB's, Inlet etc.)

^^^^ as dan said, it not worth doing any to a 1.4 its just a straight swap with a 1.6 16v, i will be doing that when my 1.4 blows its done 80k now! so if i was u put a 1.6 in!!!! can tune them up really well!!

id prefer a tuned 1.6 to a 2.0ltr, mainly do to the fact that its hard to sell a 2.0ltr on! and also a 1.6 will handle better, ok ud get the 2.0ltr to handle well but not the same as a 1.6 IMO

very true but you dont get the same kick due to lack of torque the 1./1.6 have. Plant a 2ltr and u wont stop smilling

standard 1.6 is 9.5seconds, a 2.0ltr is between 7-8seconds, my car with these mods:-
viper induction kit
superchip
lexmaul inlet
cat back grp a scorpion stainless exhaust
is quicker to 60 that a 1.6 16v corsa buti m in the process or trying to sort out a c16xe engine now, but needs a major rebuild!

I've got a 180bhp odd c16xe which does a 1/4 in 14.065 @101.92mph.

For a comparison a Standard Escort cosworth does a 1/4 in 15.1
