Originally posted by JonnyJ For me, it was always clear from the outset that the blame was incorrectly placed. There can be no doubt that Liverpool will have had a few characters about, like the ones who spent most of the 80s causing mayhem around England and Europe, but it was quite simply shoddy incompetence and deliberately corrupt actions afterwards by the police. It just goes to show how much corruptness there is (or at least was) in the police force. Remember this was a time where football fans were always looked upon as "hooligan scum" who went around there country causing trouble. There can be no doubt that there was a prevailing attitude of callousness and heartlessness towards the fans on that day along the lines of "bloody football fans deserve it". For the police, it was far too easy to cover it up and go along with that attitude, "Why should we lose our jobs just because of some football hooligan scum". I'm glad this report has come out like it has, because even today, football fans are laboured with responsibility for disasters like Hillsborough and although the image has changed for the better we are still suffering with the outcomes of the Taylor report, ie standing at football. Now this report has effectively been torn up and branded a completely made up story I'm hoping we will see even more of a swing in terms of public attitude towards football fans because while we all moan about the Premier League, England and the plastic fans with facepaint, let's take pride in the fact that football fans are no longer regarded as scum and it is football fans, people like us on here (well, some of us :o), who have worked hard whether consciously or sub-consciously to improve that image. It's not better policing, football intelligence, CCTV, government legislation that changed football. The fans changed football.
