Point and shoots are a different ballgame, I've got a 12mp pentax thing here that's not anywhere close to my DSLR, if you can get more MP in a DSLR though it's only a benefit.

Also enables you to crop more and still have a useable picture.

there are quite a few second hand canons going on tp at the moment for about 300-400

After 6mp its really only the size of the picture that your going to see a difference in.

I have to laugh at all these point and shoots with more MP than my D300

6mp isn't enough when you can have double that, there's no benefit to not having the extra detail.

I have a Nikon D40 and have never wanted for a lens. It's a great little camera for a beginner although now I do crave something faster like a D300.

People saying 6mp isn't enough really do need to be silent. I've printed A2 and it looks superb.

If I was starting again I would definately go to Jessops and try out everything first and see what you like best.

Personally I think Canon and Nikon are the best due to the amount of accessories available, range of lenses etc. I know people like Sony/Pentax etc do offer lots, but not nearly as much.

As Cavey says, then look on CPB and buy the best value. OR get onto TalkPhotography and look through the classified section for what you're after. Theres usually a load of beginners gear for sale hardly used and you can pick up a real bargain.

There's quite a few people on here with the A200, they were selling very well last year being a fair bit cheaper than the nikons/canons.

The general advice seems to be go into Jessops, or whatever camera shop and have a handle of them.

The Nikon D40, Sony A200 and Canon 400D are the entry levels for each make (someone correct me if that's wrong), so ask to have a play with each of them, they'll all have a different feel and certain buttons in different places.

Come home, go on http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk and get it online, or get it from a place which will pricematch for you

I've got a D60, and it's fine for what I want, if I was buying one now, i'd probably look for a camera that would auto-focus tho, instead of the lenses doing it, as they're a fair bit more on lens cost. You'll be spending more on the camera to start, but it'll save in the long run

John will tell you the Canon auto-focus :)

D40x is 10mp I think not sure how much they cost in relation to the D60.

Im prob gonna buy a dslr soon and my budget is the same as yours :)

I'd buy a canon, don't have to worry about AF on lenses (and they are better :o )

Although pixels aren't everything, on a DSLR atm more is almost always better.

6mp is a bit anorexic these days.

Looking to finally get a dslr as there is only so many photo's you can take with a crappy point and click. Only looking to spend upto £300 tops really (After looking around and seeing lenses go for triple seems really tight lol) but thats all I can really stretch to for my first one. Been looking at the Nikon D40 and D60 as far as I can tell the D60 has a few cool features and is 10mp and the D40 is only 6mp but been told that doesnt matter much for dslr's? or is someone telling me bollocks  all this talk of different lenses too, apparently nethier camera has af so have to get lenses that have it built in both come with one 18-55 but that dont mean much too me at the min anyway. Anyone got some advice on what camera's seem best and just general help really, as I know fuck all really :(

Cheers
