Don't go for a cheap PoE injector. Buy a second hand PoE switch if costs an issue

Id still go for a POE switch over an injector, gives you the ability to reboot the cameras remotely if needed, or even schedule automated reboots.

With regards to the injectors they are all really like for like, in situations where we do use them they seem to be ok for about a year then after that they start to fail.

The TP link ones are not to bad.

There's loads of cheap injectors on eBay and Amazon but they all look like Hong Kong 'specials' which i'm a bit dubious about.
Otherwise, as you say, it's around £20 per injector in which case after a bit more searching it makes either this Netgear GS108PE or TP-Link TL-SG1008P seem pretty reasonable - guessing both are much alike?

Will see what i can do about pics/vids but for reference, there's thread over on OCuk (second page, post #35) where a user shows a few screen grabs and offers a bit of info about cameras; there's also a handful of videos on YouTube.

PoE switches aren't cheap but the last time I checked it's at least £20 for an injector. I know that's still half the price but you'll have more ports on the switch.

Get some pictures/vids up when you get it please.

Ended up going for a pair of Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I (spec) - seem to be decent cameras considering the output and price (£130 mark).

Just to clear up my assumptions on PoE, i've yet to deal with PoE devices, the cameras are spec'd for 802.3af which means they require a (min) 44vDC / 15W PoE injector - that correct? Can anyone recommend any PoE injectors?

I was looking at PoE switches but the cheapest i've seen is a D-Link at £80 which is a bit rich for my liking considering it'd just be the two camera's attached.

Seem pretty decent considering they're all around the £60 to £80 mark, picture quality doesn't look too bad (AirCam Mini) and it looks like they work with the Synology software with a bit of hackery.

Might take a punt with a Mini (only £57 from voipon.co.uk) and see how it goes.

Try 4con or linitx :)

They're the bullet one on ebay for £40-50, would have to check. Nothing too special but IR works good and they've been solid for around 2yrs now outside. Nice solid metal construction with cover over top also and antenna on back. About the only issue I've had was the occasional spider making a home over the lens on the outside  Easily solved with a quick wipe lol Other than that no leaks or let downs.

Quality is sufficient, can read number plates at distance, make out faces, etc. Will email snaps straight from camera or you'd need a DVR or software on a PC for vids. Can watch live over net/app. Got some great shots of birds mid flight, dogs shitting on my garden, etc  Worked great for intended purpose anyway, all dog shits returned to owner ha

Wireless too like you're after, but I'd say realistically no more than 5-6m range, especially through an outside wall. Depends where router is I guess. Set mine up with homeplugs and ethernet in the end for stability as they'd drop out occasionally and didn't like going through two walls.

Folks setup is some 4 camera HD Guardian DVR jobbie with little dome cams, pretty slick and does everything, not sure on model numbers. Can cope with 16 cameras iirc

Has anyone got a wireless IP camera's they recommend? Potentially a few locations that might be a bit of a pig to ethernet to.

Bang for buck, can't fault my Tenvis cams. Folks have a full setup from Guardian, which also does the job.

Much appreciated for that Nath, will have a look at the Sony.

Have you got any recommendations for bullet cameras? Just thinking i might be able to install them a little more discreetly than a dome camera.

As for the NAS, perhaps down the road i might put a dedicated system together but currently the NAS (DS2413) is already in place, low power, plenty of storage and grunt and has the software built-in (and from a quick play it's seem suitable for what i need).

Currently on the list are -

  • Foscam FI8910W or FI8905E - quality seems meh, seem to be a lot of fakes around but they're extremely cheap.
  • Dahua IPC-HFW3200SP or IPC-HFW2100P - £200-250 range but both seem to get decent reviews and PQ from demo videos seems pretty damn good.
  • Merit Lilin LR7022 - £200 range but again decent quality and reviews.
  • Vivotek IP8330 or IP8331.
  • Vivotek IP8132 or IP8133 for indoors - compact, reasonably priced, PQ seems ok from THIS.
  • Vivotek IP8134 - Wireless, decent PQ from demo's.
  • Sony DH110

Any more i should look at?

A cheap internal mini dome (POE) that I couldn't recommend enough is a Sony DH110

(can also do you a very good deal on them so don't look to much into the RRP)

You could get away with not having IR if theres adequate lighting outside but some cameras do have auto day/night mode and work very at night, you could also go down the route of a POE/Mains IR light rather than having cameras with it built in and to be honest you would get better coverage that way too.

Why do you want it to work with a NAS? there are some good IP software solutions out there, check it on a cheap windows PC and you would have an instantly better system?

On the hunt for a handful of wireless and wired (POE ideally but no an issue if not) IP Camera's for use indoors and outdoors (guessing IR will be needed) around the home. Ideally want to keep it to a few hundred (£) per camera but other than that i'm open to any recommendation as long as the picture quality is reasonable.
Only real requirement is that they work with a Synology NAS box but i'll whittle through any recommendations for compatibility.

So far i've seen Y-Cam's (i know Richie recommended them on here a while back), SensR-IQ, Foscam (supposedly cheap and PQ is so-so but a lot of fakes around) and Tenvis cameras get recommended/mentioned on a few forums but has anyone got any other recommendations (model numbers would be handy)? Are there any Hong Kong/Chinese 'specials' that are worth looking at?

Appreciate any advice :)

Edit - Dahua (specifically THIS model) get mentioned; worth looking at? Quality (HERE) seems reasonable.

Edit 2 - Also seen the Merit Lilin LR7022; again seems reasonable (Day, Night) - anyone got any thoughts?
