premium diesel only helps to clean dirty engines. The small increase in cetane rating wont do anything significant.

is 11p ok for you?
||posted on 21st Dec 17 at 11:13|
It needs to be about 8p/litre cheaper to make a difference with your 'mileage improvements'

The average prices for diesel (right now) are:
That's a 9.8% increase in price to get your 3.5% increase in efficiency.. Do you even Maths?

I just use Esso standard diesel in mine.

well all I can tell you is I used to get 550 max now I'm getting 570
I only use 'premium diesel' because that is what Costco sells

Its well known that 'premium' fuels are a profit margin increasing gimmick..
Much like people who buy Himalayan Salt lamps and swear blind they actually improve their health, its a load of old tripe :thumbs:

it could be
||posted on 12th Dec 17 at 08:59|
That's a 3% change which could easily be down to driving styles, traffic or even just weather differences.

from 0 to 0

You probably filled up 20 miles sooner on the standard stuff, not a good test at all.

I get 550 average from standard diesel and 570 average from premium

The actual 'fuel' content of diesel and petrol is very tightly controlled and regulated so the 'special' fuels simply contain additives (detergent octane/cetane boosters and lubricants).. The scientific evidence to backup the benefits of these fuels is pretty weak.

If anything, higher calorific value and more cetanes.

I can't tell any difference. Had used it in my vrs then switched back to normal shell diesel.
||posted on 9th Dec 17 at 16:12|
Yeah does my head in too. I can't believe it actually makes massive (if any) difference in terms of fuel economy or power, I'm really only interested in using it if it actually helps with longevity of the engine/turbos/stops soot etc etc

Don't know but that BP advert where that smug voiceover guy is like 'ooooh you're dragging an anchor behind you' can utterly do one, at best exaggeration at worst a complete lie.

Is there actually any benefit in using shell premium diesel ? Or is it just snake oil ?
