The 1.4 engines/gearboxes are no more unreliable than any others fitted in mk4s. But they are sinfully slow, as is the 1.6

100hp 16v? Never heard of many going round, more so popping any coil packs. 1.2s and 1.8Ts are common for coilpacks

Get a 1.9 non turbo diesel. Our works van is a caddy Sdi with 230K on it. So good on fuel as well, can't imagine a 1.4 being great on fuel in such a heavy car

Slow and thirsty, had one years ago, water pump gave up and took the belt with it.

I had a mk5 golf 1.4. EML and regular coil pack problems. Also it went back with the second gear hanging out of it.

Box problems are on all 5 speed VAG boxes not just the 1.4's they shear the rivets off the diff.

In your head youll think, its a 1.4 so it'll spank 1.1/1.2's. This isnt the case, when people say they are slow they aint lieing. My mate had one and my 205 1.1 4speed was much faster

1.4 had gear box problems,as did the 1.6, a bolt/ rivit head sheres off somewhere inside. Ive had one of each, luck had it i was ok but i know some people that had no end of trouble.
Throttle body, lamba sensor also water temp switch can corse eratic running eml to come on.knocking from the front is usally anti roll bar bushes( there 18/19/21mm to choose from).
Find a good one and you should be ok.

3i_gaz

posted on 29th Dec 11 at 22:56

Engines are unreliable.

better off with a 1.9 diesel one mate. if your not arsed about speed just get a 90 horse one. Far better than the 1.4 petrols
