Quick answer is yes because you get a better burn but its offset against things like the throughput of air from the intake which is colder than the chamber and that the fuel itself is relatively cold before combustion.

Hot engine isn't necessarily bad, hot intake is bad because the burn isn't as efficient. But if you have cold, dense air then the burn is good and that's where the power is. Different issue to if the engine is running hot and you're thinning the oil, detonating the mixture or warping stuff.

Cone filter will typically run hotter because the air is drawn from inside the engine bay.

Hence why panel and modifications to the airbox are generally preferred.

K&N or similar will also flow better than paper but the cost saving is negligible, you're supposed to re-oil it as often as you would replace a paper one.

appreciate the response mate and i was toying with the idea of that cold air feed to the panel filter but does more air actually mean more fuel?

The idea of an after market air filter is to let more air in leading to more fuel being put in leading to supposed gains in performance. Cone filters are useless unless they are enclosed as they'll just suck the warm air from the engine bay. Panel filters with a cold air feed are better as it won't suck in warm air.

As has been said though on a small powered car power gains won't be anything without other modifications and a remap. They'll last a lot longer than standard paper ones so are worth it in that sense.

Is it any cheaper if you 'service' it at the recommended intervals?

if you want it quieter and u have done that to the airbox already then a good panel filter would suit you best tbh airfilter will give u abit of noise when putting foot down

my dads level 4 qualified and has a degree etc.. in mechanics and reckons that an after market filter only makes your engine run hotter?
t or f?

Not in terms of any performance gains on yours but as said if your planning on keeping your car a good few years its worth it in terms of the cost saving.

John

No, better off getting a new paper one every year.

Its worth it since you never have to replace them.
I had a Courtney Sport (Pipercross) panel filter in my Corsa 12v purely for that reason.

is a k&n panel filters (or other well known brands) actually worth getting/do you actually get any real gains from them?
reason i ask is i keep saying im going to get one for the sport but not sure if its worth spending £30 or whatever on one
