i have had a 1.2 c and a 1.3 c. the 1.3 cdti did double the mileage compared to my 1.2.

diesel ftw

The mileage we will be doing. Its the other running costs (tax and insurance) im thinking about, they will be half combined, thats all....

tbf that is one cack derv engine tbh - fair play its reliable but the 1.5td is much better.

Have you lived with a 12v Corsa?

Yes, on fuel, there may not be a huge difference BUT on driving experience, there will be. Here's the spec for each.
12v = 54bhp 60lb-ft torque
1.3 CDTi = 69bhp 125lb-ft torque.

I know which I'd rather have, plus 1.3 CDTI will be a better long term spend.

The Escort is probably costing you next to nothing to run with the mileage you do.

Shelling out on a Corsa C diesel is more of a luxury than necessity by the sound of it :) Which there is nothing wrong with treating yourself!

My 1.2 C consistantly does 40mpg, not hard to get at all, as said, you'd need to be doing serious mileage to make a saving.

i am seriously looking into the 1.3C, bu tI suppose it will be hinged on whether we can afford the initial outlay of 2.5k ish (think 6 months down the road) for a C or whether it will be better to go for the cheaper petrol, time will tell, thanks for the views so far :)

I used to get my 1.4 C to do 39mpg religiously - I'm actually a bit disappointed that I can only get the Sxi to do low 40's on the same route :lol:.

That said the corsa get's driven like a granny which probably helps alot - there's just no point in ragging it as it's just not a quick car... that's what the Astras for... :lol:

I've had a 1.2 c sxi, brother had a 1.2 b , know at least one other person with a 1.2 c sxi, none of them do close to 43mpg, as as you said, it's not hard to work out.

I'm not disputing you could get one to do it but thats definitely not the norm.

I'm comparing the two becuase he's deciding between buying an old 306 "on the cheap" as he put it, or a newer Corsa C. A corsa B would sit somewhere in the middle both in price, but give the same MPG. I'm "prooving" you could get a compromise between the two with a petrol engine.

As for the "Just seen the 43mpg in a 1.2 corsa, my arse :lol:" - It's not rocket science to work out an MPG figure for a car...

I'd have a 1.3cdti corsa c over any of the 1.0, 1.2 or 1.4 offerings, brilliant little engine.
Comparing a B and C on price is a bit of a waste of time imo, any older bodyshape, older in years car will be cheaper, what does that prove.

Just seen the 43mpg in a 1.2 corsa, my arse :lol:

According to Parkers - a 306 1.9 TD (92 brake) does 46MPG, a 1.2 corsa SXi for example gives 43 - my moms does that sat in traffic (45 miles a day - takes about 2 hours so pretty shit traffic) on the M6 everyday.

A 1.3 C does 64mpg, but the cheapest one is showing up on Autotrader for around the £3k mark - double the price for a decent 1.2 Sxi B.

small diesel cars arent worth it

the difference between say a 2.5 v6 vectra and a 1.9 cdti vectra are lots, but between a 1.0 corsa and 1.3 cdti corsa will be tiny

you will also need to do a lot more miles to notice any financial benifit, plus the car will be more expensive to buy, and diesel costs more now

Not worth it, you'll pay so much more for a diesel over a small petrol that the difference in price would take you thousands and thousands of miles to make up.

In my opinion, I'd go for a smaller petrol.

With the increased cost of diesel over petrol, you probably won't save much in terms of fuel. Diesels I'd say only really save, when doing long journeys, especially on the motorway.

Having said that, if you're on bit of a budget when you move in together, then start driving places together, having a car that will then do good MPG may be better.

in that case, with miles being kept to the minimum is it worth downgrading to a smaller petrol car then? its just the road tax that stings the fuck out of having the escort, because it doesnt use much more petrol than the SRi did, but its £60 a year more in tax, and im fairly certain something may go wrong with it sooner rather than later :o

For the mileage the car's doing. I don't think it's worth it. It depends on the financial state you're both in at the time really. Get a piece of paper, write as many benefits you can, and as many disadvantages (of having each car) and see which comes out on top.

Right then, in the new year (June) missus is moving in with me. Currently weve got a 1.8 petrol escort to get her the 5 miles to and from work and the 50 miles to and from Lincoln every weekend. When she moves up here she will be getting a job in cycling/walking distance but we still want a car to do the weekly shop and fetch heavy items from town. Therefore, is it worth selling this and buying a 306 diesel on the cheap, or splash out a bit on a C 1.3.

My reasoning is the tax will be cheaper on the C (180 -> 35) fuel as well, and insuance probably a bit. But what with depreciation etc, dont know whether its worth trying to find a C or not. Dont give a shit if its all tatty, only get some old twat crash into it anyway, cn get a decent example when i eventually get a driveway :thumbs:
