I see this a lot - white people who both say they can't appreciate how bad it is - but then go on to say how bad it is. I can't empathise either but I also wouldn't go on to put words in to the mouth of anyone. I appreciate that a lot of this 'its so bad' narrative is acquired knowledge and you're passing on what your have heard first hand. But the danger is that some of it gets ramped up such that it gains more gravity as it gets passed along. And eventually that becomes the new truth even though that wasn't what people originally said.
