I'm sure you must use plenty of phrases that aren't quite true in your day to day life (how many times have you said you have a cold?), this is just another one.
I'll rephrase what i said for you though - i had a herniated disc in the L4/L5 region and compression of the L4 nerve.

Thought that last time, so binned the memory foam matress and bought a good one, but it's not really helped, It's not a constant issue, as I can be fine for weeks-months on end, and then boom it spasms and goes bad, has me demented.

Sleeping habit could possibly be a culprit.
Perhaps you sleep funny at night and there's some allignment issues? Posture? Pillow too high?
Chiropractors or sports massage would help.

I've slipped a disc a few times and get back spams especially when working on the car as the engine is low down and i'm 6ft4".
My advice (aside from doing back stretches/exercises) is change the way you do things.
If you are working under the bonnet (and your not too short) can you get away with kneeling on a box or something instead and still reach the areas with ease? Sounds odd, but can save you some grief and your back wont be as bad.
Bending and lifting are a killer too. It always seems easy to just quickly reach over and grab something but there's a greater chance of doing damage that way. Could be worth thinking about how you lift and bend to pick things up and changing that too (lift with the legs, back straight, chin up type things)?
The wife has just gone past her 6 week point of having her L4/L5 disc cut back as it ruptured due to not bending/lifting objects correctly. I cant think what she was picking up when it went, but she ended up in quite a bad way for a few weeks before she was put forward for surgery :/

Willing to try anything.
I know what you mean, I got stuck leaning over the bonnet of a mk4 golf when changing spark plugs last year, and had to phone my wife who was inside the house :lol:

Used to get them. I actually cried once as I couldn't move at all and i was stuck at the top of the stairs :lol: The pain is terrible.
I had acupuncture and physio done and it's been fine for a good while now.
The acupuncture is weird. You can feel the pain leaving your body. It's hard to describe the feeling, incase you thought that sounds odd.
My issue was with a muscle that runs parallel to the spine on my left side.

Anyone else get these?
I get them now and then, have done for the past 5 years or so, don't recall ever doing any major damage to my back, but it's starting to piss me off, as when it happens I'm crippled for 2-3 days,
Anybody got any ideas? thought about a sports massage or something, but read conflicting reports saying they cans sometimes make it worse.
