Originally posted by Ian W License fee also pays for the BBC Radio channels though iirc so not as simply as it sounds.
Licence fee funds a lot, lot more than just TV, radio and online content - economy seven clocking, yup BBC/Licence fee; helping Freeview/Freesat/Youview infrastructure, yup Licence fee; pushing new technology (HD channel and 4K trials etc), yup BBC/Licence fee. Whilst arguably the TV and online content could be put behind a paywall, everything else would be extremely difficult. It's why it's probably just best to roll it into Tax - arguably it's another form of tax anyway. I still think iPlayer should be placed behind some form of user/login system linked to your licence; although it's now illegal to view with out a licence, it isn't going to stop anyone leeching.
Originally posted by Ste they have adverts to pay for it.
American TV springs to mind; absolutely horrendous for that sort of thing.
Originally posted by Steve ....but thats not true if you're receiving your channels through Sky or similar.
Someone needs to maintain the feeds to other broadcasters (ground stations etc)
