I've used Skype while browsing, seemed fine......plus I could use my normal headphones and mic, rather than having to fork out for a phone-handset.

Got the phones now and all i can say is im really impressed with the service! I can now call a few of my mates completely free, and the rest cheaper than before :D:D You can also set your status to "Skype me" which means anyone can get your 'number' and just ring you up and say hello, which is so funny when you are wasted! I rang some random spanish guy when me and my mates got back from the pub, and also some random french guy who i was trying to convince i dont speak a word of french, but saying it in french.

been doing this for a few years now, friend is a BT engineer, so he sorted us out with some equipment to make free called over the net, from anywhere in the world.

ive been using SkyPe for a while, told my mate bout it whos in miami at the mo and we chat to eachother for free :)

he also uses it to phone home, as its much cheaper than phonecards etc.

its a good service, id probably use it more if i had to pay the home phone bill

would be abit limiting if they just did a deal with BT/DSL, would mean that anyone wanting VoD with sky NEED to have BT BB :| - and we all know how good bt are (almost as good as NTL  )....

Ian - aye, i believe the returns are just small chunks, but it would mean a phone line being engaged whilst using VoD. Or if you made it to use the connection when needed, then it would be abit slow - press button, wait for the modem to dialup excute command etc etc.

After posting, the only thing i could think of was using a BB connection (ie: sky box have a ethernet port on back to be connected to router etc).

Eitherway, i dont know how sky are going to do it all though - as all channels are piped to your box and the box takes the ones it wants (basic summary of it etc). And the idea behind it all is that a custom channel is created just for (again a rough summary) you and the programme your watching etc etc. It wouldnt suprise me if they just stuck to the Sky+ PVR system for time being, it does something similar :)

I think thats where cabled VoD is better suited, they have more control over the system and create a true VoD. However, NTL are far off completing it, and its only just being trial'd in a few places. Plus NTL are absolute crapped out on the old cash, and apparently its costs 20k to upgrade each exchange for VoD - so again it will be a while before us NTL folk see it.

eitherway, i will be interesting to see where this all goes :)

edit - the above is nout to do with VoIP, its VoD..sorry to go off topic :)

Quite a lot of the new ADSL packages are capped bandwidth limits. Which voip could very easily eat away at. Majority of people might not realise this unless its clearly spelled out for them.

Using technology derived from music streaming to bring audio in and out of your computer to make phone calls on the cheap.

Uplink is very narrow, phone line would do it.

This years may see Video On Demand kick off aswell,

NVOD already exists! RVOD is going to be implemented by NTL later this year

i know london have had VoD for a few years (from that tv service company), and aye NTL are in production of doing VoD for cable etc :)

Although i dunno what sky is going to do :boggle: its not as if they have a decent two way interface at the moment, and two way sat link would cost and arm and leg :|

Thought sky were trying to team up with BT to use DSL for the return connection? Both companies together can then offer packages competing with cable and the other new players...

Had someone cold-calling trying to sell VoIP today.

I told him the only person I call sits two desks away, and it's only to do prank calls where I hang up when he answers.

The guy calling guessed I wasn't interested.

Has anyone ever used this? Heard loads of talk about skype service, and just had an email from firebox about a hardware handset that plugs into your pc like a normal phone, and you get free calls to other similar setups, or 1.2p/min to landlines and mobiles! Looks pretty good, and im tempted to try it, but was just wondering if anyone else had any experience.

Link here anyway - http://www.firebox.com/index.html?dir=firebox&action=product&pid=1025

thats just a handset for VOIP (which plugs in via USB, can get propper telephones that use CAT5, so no need for pc) :) you need the software and provider ontop - like skype etc etc
Skype is cheap though (per min) -
GBP 0.014 pennies to uk phones,
GBP 0.163 pennies to mobiles
