Your talking bare block and head. IIRC the crank, cams, etc are only replaced if out of the recomended tollerences.

a x16xe exchange engine that is built up to the same standard as a new engine is £950 but u would have to have all the part from 1.6 16v corsa to fit it in to yours. the best thing to do if you want to upgrade your car to a 1.6 is buy a crashed corsa and swap the whole lot over. Exchange engines only really work if you are just needing to replace your cars original engine as your old one is knacked

Thanks Paul that's help clear it up a lot.

Any idea how much a 1.6 16v would cost - low milage? in exchange for a 1.2 16v 40k miles?

it works by vauxhall getting a second hand engine and then rebuilding it at the same place the new ones are made using new parts eg crank bearings pistons cams and all the seals. then they sell it to you ready to fit all you have to do is swap the manifolds, strater, clutch and a few sensors. then you take your engine back to the dealer where they send it back to vauxhall for the prosess to start all over again.
that all we do when a engine has died we dont rebuild them as its to much hassle and this way vauxhall give the 12 month warranty instead of us.
also all the moden engines ar on the same vxpro scheme the othe month we got a C20LET engine for £1200 after the turbo had let go and fed its self to engine. hope that clears it up any more questions just u2u me.

Is it a brand new engine part exchanged for your old one?

im guessing you cant get a C20XE on exchange? I do quite a lot of miles and need to find a pretty low mileage one for my conversion!

Thing is with having your existing engine rebuilt, you know it's mint. A 2nd hand 1600 16v may have worn oil rings on the pistons and/or knackered stem seals.

I can't help thinking a second hand GSi engine would be 300-400 ?

Mine was £1000 for bottom end, plus £250 for the head.
