how do you know the valve stem seals, and more importantly the head gasket need changing?

The warning light is for oil pressure. The light only comes on when the oil pressure falls below 4psi, which is too late.

wat cars have u guys got??

my Gsi 94 plate has got REAL bad oil consumption/leak/burning problem, but no light ever comes on to let me know the oil is low or theirs a problem with oil! once after a 300mile motorway jouney i checked oil level wen got home n it was empty :!

since then ive had oil problems, u think i could have fuked up the piston rings or even the pistons themselves since then??:(

i know the head gaskets and valve stem seals need replacing though!!

The oil pressure sensor is on the back of the oil pump so if oil is being circulated then it is reaching the sensor. Oil might be shifting away from the oil pick up pipe (oil surge), but in this case the oil pump isn't picking up oil so things could easily get damaged.

I'd check the sensor connector if the oil is within the limits, which is should be if you topped up yesterday!

it sounds like ur oil is low mate if ur thrashing about in ur car alot u use more oil so i would get it checked an topped up asap

wat car u got mate??

dunno if this helps but...
in my Gsi 94 the handbrake light is same light used for faults detected in the braking system, so wen i went round bends it came on, turned out my brake fluid was really low!
