yup, its not how tight it is... Its supposed to be at a set torque anyhow. Its the actual joint - they are poorly made! I think their is two joints actually along the coloumn, one right after the EPS, the other where you can see is where it goes through the bulkhead. I think mine is probably the top one as it sound right behind the steering wheel!

so am i right in thinking that the link i can see just above and to the left of my clutch pedal is the "universal joint at the bottom of the eps"? cos i had this link tightened about 6 months ago and the noise stopped for a while.....but now its back :boggle:

don't worry about it iv'e had my car into vauxhall on several occasions for this problem and now they have said to me they don't do it under warranty anymore because it's a design fault and isn't dangerous.annoying noise though something to do with the joint at the bottom of the eps

yeh i've got this prob at the mo with my corsa c. put the steering wheel at 12 o clock when stationary and wiggle it from side to side and it knocks. i'm sure its comin from inside the car. just been into the vaux garage for a week and they said they replaced the steering column? :boggle:

Yeah mine was a x-reg 2000 1.2 with prob the same steering as you had. Vauxhall do know about the prob, they have listed quite a few for recall on the fault. You can call the recall hotline and quote your VIN and REG and they can check on the database for ANY recalls on your vehicle. Vectra's have the problem too and a lot of newshape C's were recalled! Its a bitch to actually diagnose where the knock is from, i'd definatley say its cabin side. If you wanted to cure it by trial and error your looking at £230 for a reconditioned exchange on your rack, £120 for a U.Joint and feck knows how much the electric coloumns go for!! I DEFINATLEY dont think its track rod ends or ball joints. Anyone who's cured it let us know!!

Same problem mate, clunk/knock sound. Does everyone else who's had this prob have EPS (electric power steering) Ive had it 2 years, had it back to vaux after 8months out the showroom, got rack changed, came back a week later, took it back, tightened everything and it stopped for another week, then came back. Had it ever since (2 years) but MOT now approaching so need to sort it. Im going for universal joint first. I actually think its something to do with the electric coloumn unit itself, but cant figure as ive not had it to bits and Haynes dont explain that part so I cant see wether it could cause the prob. If its not the U.J then im stumped, may pull the entire column off and swap to a manual to work the biceps...
