Not mainshaft bearing as the mainshaft wouldnt be turning when sat in neutral would be input shaft bearings.

If it wasnt doing it before make sure they but ep80/90 in it not ATF.

Also was it recon or new clutch?

Does it make a difference if you release the clutch really slowly/gently?

Gambit a release bearing can make a rattling noise with the clutch up although its rare.

yeah, i had an astra with the same noise, thought it was the release bearing at first, changed that and the noise was still there... got fed up and took it to a gearbox place who straight away said it was the main shaft bearing, had the box overhauled and prob solved!

sounds like you have the same problem

your right, its not the release bearing.... its the 'main shaft' bearing, an integral part of the gearbox, either live with it or get a recon box.

can u not read, it aint the release bearing

Chris, did the garage not say what the whinin was?

does it happen in all gears & does the whine increase when u increase the rpm's?

any good garage wouldnt change a clutch without putting in a full kit including the thrust bearing

yeh thats what they said to me, christ no's what it is must of been something they done cos it wasnt doin it b4 it got changed

Gambit

posted on 10th Apr 03 at 13:44

if its doing it when the clutch is dis-engaged (i.e. lift up) then it aint the release bearing, the release bearing will only whine when u engage (i.e. push down) the clutch

Chris A
