Right ive been reading through migweb and what ive found is

quote:

X14XE, C16XE, X16XE, X16XEL - all share same inlet cam
C16XE X16XE - exhaust cam is same part number as the inlet cam
X14XE, X16XEL- share the same exhaust cam, but is not the same cam as above (i,e does not use inlet cam)

The head from the X14XE has smaller inlet and outlet ports and the exhaust cam has a lower duration and valve lift than the exhaust cam in the X16XE.

The cams in the X16XE have the same duration and lift as eachother, whereas the the inlet cam in the X14XE head has higher duration and lift than your exhaust cam.

The reason the X16XEL (XELower Power) that comes in astra's/vectra's has a lower output than the X16XE found in corsa's/tigra's (both engines are 1.6 ecotec) is because it uses the cylinder head from the X14XE (and a different inlet manifold design).

So, smaller ports, different exhaust cam. These are the only 2 differences.

Is all that right? So im going to need an exhaust cam and just have to live with smaller ports on the head?

Someone on here said that all the heads are the same part numbers...?

I had a x16xel with a sport inlet on and it was just the same as any other 1.6 sport

Right so shopping list should be:
XE ECU
XE cams
XE lower inlet

Is that right? Plus the inlet gaskets, rocker gaskets and a good clean while its apart. What about valve shims etc would they be worth changing or just keep the ones that are there?

ecu would need to be changed, cams will be fine with pistons.

So if i keep everything the same ECU, head etc and just put x16xe cams in and change the lower manifold it should be perfect? Ive read a million different stories of what needs changing - ECU, cams, head, manifolds, pistons etc. Will the clearance on the pistons be ok with xe cams?

As said, you actually have a better head than a x16xe, Put x16xe cams in it and you will have a good engine.

cant you just use a x16xe bottom inlet?? if it is as you say 1.4 head on 1.6 bottom end then should just be the case of using the bottom half of a x14xe or x16xe inlet

Right well basically ive been a bit of a dosy badger and only just bothered to check my engine code. I was sold the car and was told it had an X16XE in it. The inlet was different but i was told it was from an astra and just provided more torque. So i thought great its about the same power as a GSI just with more torque. Well i ordered a powerbox and ive come to fit it today and nothing seemed to match up right or make sense so i thought i best check the engine code just incase. I now find out its an X16XEL and is only 98bhp as standard. So im pretty miffed to be honest but i can only make do and improve so how can i change my X16XEL to a X16XE so i can fit my powerbox? Ive read that its basically a 1.4 head on a 1.6 bottom end. So do i need to change the head to an X16XE head? What else would i need to change/do? Any help would be great as ive now got a powerbox that wont fit and what i was told was a GSI corsa with astra inlet thats now basically a vectra b engined corsa. My own fault i supose
