Sort of what i meant dave but what normally happens is, if u turn the engine over and u already got lights on they'll dim as the starter motor is turning over cause of the load drawn by the motor and then go bright again once engine has started. this is normally an indication that the battery is gettin old and not holding as much charge as it should, but again it can happen on a good battery but it more likely to happen on one on its way out in my experience!

Yeah i'd say its def just the bat gettin old and not holding its charge as well as it should, cause that voltage, with the alternator is about right! Do u get your healights dimming as well when u turn the engine over (ie if u have lights on b4 u turn engine on and then start engine) cause that'd be another sign too, but i'm 99.99% sure that if u change your battery the prob will go away, obviously cant be 100% without seeing it but i'm pretty much def thats the prob!

well the battery 12.4 volts and with altenator went to bout 14.3

the car is 8 years old but prob had more than 1 battery

Sounds to me mate like ya battery is just gettin a bit low cause it should be runnin a bit higher than 12.4v so when your turnin the ignition your alternator is keepin it charged to the correct voltage. Prob is just a case of your battery gettin a bit old!

you should only use ur neons when your engine is runnin bcoz iv you use things in ur car with just the ignition on it will drain ur battery , so you could try gettin ur battery charged or just get a new battery BUT get a heavy duty battery coz they are much better if you are runnin lights n amps n stuff,if this turns out not 2b the problem then at least ule have a good battery.

i recently bough soem 12 inch neon tubes for the footwells of my car.
i put them in and they work ok ish, off the battery. when i turn the battery on, they suddenly go much brighter. i know they shud coz of the altenator.

but my mate bought the same ones but different colour and his are alot brighter thatn mine when running off the battery (ignitions off)

i checked the battery voltage and it is about 12.4 volts. does anyone know what the problem is
