Car in neutral - Push clutch in, noise usually stops. Let clutch out, noise comes back.

Other way round.
Release bearing whines when you PRESS the clutch.
The bearing does nothing when the clutch is released....

Whining with the clutch out is usually gearbox input shaft bearings.

 So it is........confused!

Experienced a whining noise coming from my engine bay.

Was only when accelerating/decellerating but then was constant sitting at 50/60 so I stopped for 5 mins and had a wee look about and made a few phone calls

Started off again on my journey for about 40miles and everything was fine, then it started again but soon stopped

Used the car over the weekend, did at least 200miles and the noise has never ocured again

I thought gearbox problems, but the gearbox doesnt feel any different
