right well i went down vaux this mornin and asked at the counter that i needed a compression test, and he just looked at me with a blank face, started the go on about something and said that will be £40... dont really think he had a clue
this is how much oil is burning, i filled up the oil on sunday morning so it was full on the dipstick, checked it this morning and its on the last line now:rolleyes:

tester from halfords is £25. and like dave A said black smoke is over fuelling as mine is pissing out right now

buy a compression tester. screw it in the spark plug hole on each cylinder one at a time. take the king lead off and crank the engine untill a reading can be taken (couple of revolutions of the crank). record the readings should be similar. if one or more is low do the test again with a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder. if compression changes then this will suggest piston rings are shot. if not i would say valve stem seals. c tester will cost you about a tener from halfords etc

Have it set-up on a RR. Or the lamber sensor could be fooked

i always let it warm up first, ive never redlined when cold. the previous owner had the engine done though, he said he let it warm up but you never know do you.

black smoke = running rich
white smoke= burning water
blue smoke = oil

Well it shouldn't be smoking after 3k...

How did you run it in? Redlined from cold every day?

deano119

no ive not done a compression test yet, i havnt had time to look at it yet. Im only asking because its a new engine, is this a common fault on the gsi lump?

Ry_B

Could be valve stem seals or piston rings?

Done a compression test?

A mate was following me the other day and noticed black smoke coming from my exhaust, checked the oil level and the oil is down. Funny thing is its had a new engine and only doen 3k, shouldnt be burning oil should it! Any opinions on here?

Its a gsi by the way, cheers.
