read this bit again:

easy way to tell is if your speedo starts at 10mph its cable, 0mph and its electronic.

it will cause it to cut out as the cars ecu tells the icv (idle control valve) when to open and close when you dip the clutch when you pull up at a junction etc. the ecu uses a signal that is sent by the vss (vehicle speed senser) to determine vehicle speed vs engine speed to tell the icv how far and how long to open for. the vss generates its signal in the back of the clocks. its driven via the speedo cable. no vss= no signal to the icv= no air on idle= car cuts out

that a good enough explanation for you:P

if the speedo is working, then it is connected fine. it could be the vss thats in the back of the clocks thats knockered, but its unlikely as it worked fine before the cable snapped right?

trace the red/blue wire seen in this pic of a clock plug:

trace it from that point on the plug down to the ecu. (with ignition on) and check for continuity. if there is continuity check that the clocks are connecting onto the plug properly when they are pushed into place.

if thats all ok, then its likely that the vss in the clocks is faulty and you may need to try a different set.

its 2.20 am now, and im off to bed:wave:

No, i had the exact same problem .. i dint connectmy speedo cable after my conversion and it kept cuttin out at light or when u dip clutch down ..

i can't honestly see it being ur dials ... It's kinda a bast@rd to get to to fix in place the cable, so maybe loose .. if like mine it has sher'd then loose bits of it are still in the holder for the cable .. the new one won't go all the way down

Or does ur speedo work ?

the man at the garage said its the clocks that'll need replacing

unclip cable from clocks

replace it all.

save yourself the money a speedo cable is around 20 quid and takes about 20 mins to fit.

i had this same problem with my 1.8 Corsa C. the dials all turned on and off whilst driving on numerous occassions and one day the car just would not start after going into limp home mode. was corrosion in the wiring behind the dash. may be just a plug to replace but difficult to get to

what year is your car? engine size?

so you reckon the speedo cable is broken?

Yea, maybe even a good idea to get the garage to do a fault reading on it - Vauxhall have special machines to diagnose faults, though it's a bit pricey...

corsa_boy

i dont have a clue about this sort stuff so, once ive found the fault code booking it into a garage maybe best?

thanks for your help

Will probably be the gearbox speed transducer or wiring. If it's the speed transducer they are about £5 from a scrappy or maybe £30-£40 new. If it's wiring then it might just be a case of securing the plug into the dash properly with a zip tie - it could be this because you say it starts woking again when you bang the clocks... Oh the clocks could be broken too - these are hundreds from Vauxhall or about £20 from a scrappy...

cheers mate, if this is the case houw much do you think im looking at?

ed

posted on 19th Sep 05 at 22:21

Yea, if you do the paperclip test (look in FAQ) it will come up with fault 24, which isVehicle Speed Sensor - no speed or low voltage. This has been known to make the car cut out but you can then re-start the car after...

Check this page out too:

corsa_boy

yeh it comes on then goes off, can that cause the car to cut out though?

ed

Is the ECU light coming on? Will probably be the vehicle speed sensor failure fault I think. Need to get the speedo repaired if it is.

ive had a dodgy speedo for a while now but when you bang the top of the dash it starts again, but today its stopped working altogether but also the car has cut out a few times this evening,

any ideas?

the cars an N reg sport

thanks :)
