what year did they start doing this? as my gf has a 1.4 16v and she has a key without a chip and it works fine

the chip, key and ECU all have to come from same car, but like siberia said instead of changing the lock barrel, take the chip out the key of the doner car and sellotape it to the lock barrel in your car

pretty much, unless you can get an ECU, key and pickup from another XE car.

Bugger, so does that mean unless i get hold of the key & pick-up too then it'll just be dead?

ok thanks mate... i might jus get all 3 mounts since they're probly in better nick than mine are lol

Anyone got any ideas as to what could cause low compression besides a dodgy ed gasket?

Rite, currently driving a 1.2 8v and i've seen a 1.4 16v going dirt cheap with 50k on the clock and compression problems (so cheap i dont mind sorting this).

Basically besides the:
ENGINE
MANIFOLDS
ECU
LOOM
GEARBOX
ECOTEC PARTS

Is there anything else i'm gonna need for the conversion?
And just out of interest, what could cause an engine to stop running coz of low compression? hoping its jus the head gasket gone....
